About us

Conceived over 60 years ago as one of the nation’s first nonprofit theaters, The Public has long operated on the principles that theater is an essential cultural force and that art and culture belong to everyone. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, The Public’s wide breadth of programming includes an annual season of new work at its landmark home at Astor Place, Free Shakespeare in the Park at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, the Mobile Unit touring throughout New York City’s five boroughs, Public Works, Public Shakespeare Initiative, and Joe’s Pub. Since premiering HAIR in 1967, The Public continues to create the canon of American Theater and is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Their programs and productions can also be seen regionally across the country and around the world. The Public has received 60 Tony Awards, 190 Obie Awards, 57 Drama Desk Awards, 61 Lortel Awards, 36 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 13 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, 62 AUDELCO Awards, 6 Antonyo Awards, and 6 Pulitzer Prizes. THE DELACORTE REVITALIZATION IS UNDERWAY! 🚧 But we're not just renovating; we're TIME-TRAVELING! 🕰️💫 As we began to pull back the former facade of The Delacorte, we were reminded of this ICONIC photo from 1961 of Joe Papp building a future for FREE theater for all in New York City. There he stands, on the very same frame that holds Free Shakespeare In The Park today, over 60 years later! 😱 We’ve been hard at work! Since October, we've been on the ground building a revitalized and more accessible theater for all in Central Park! 🌟 This isn't just a renovation; it's a LOVE LETTER to The Delacorte's LEGACY! A home for FREE art and culture for generations to come! ✨ 💌 Want to be part of the magic? 🪄 Follow along for EXCLUSIVE behind-the-fence updates at https://lnkd.in/dp7CRuRD!

On Tuesday, May 21st, The Public Theater joined 34 city-funded institutions, and a larger network of New York City museums, theaters, gardens, performing arts organizations, and even more, at City Hall to ask that $53 million be restored in the FY2025 City Budget for Arts and Culture. The NYC Cultural sector generates jobs, tax revenue, and endless joy for New Yorkers and tourists – altogether we generate over $110 billion in economic development. We ask the Mayor and City Council to invest in the sector that makes New York City the international culture capital that we all treasure. We thank our allies in the City Government for speaking up for Arts and Culture sector. Thank you to New York City Councilmember Carlina Rivera, Chair of the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations, for her support for The Public Theater and all our Cultural Institution colleagues at today’s committee hearing. #NoCutsToCulture
