Advances in science and technology have fueled American prosperity, national security, and health and well-being for decades. However, other countries' efforts in research and technology development threaten the ability of the United States to continue to lead the world in science and innovation. At the inaugural State of the Science address on June 26, National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt will explore how U.S. science and innovation are positioned to respond to rising global competition and shifting priorities for the nation’s economy, security, public health, and well-being. The United States is an important food producer globally in part because of its abundance of agriculturally productive soils, but management practices that maximize yields have adversely affected overall soil health. Our new report provides recommendations to help improve soil health and better understand the linkages between soil health and human health. The United States invests significant sums into innovation, but those innovations may not be distributed equitably. In an article for Issues in Science and Technology, Shobita Parthasarathy points out that policy and funding practices often replicate existing biases and inequalities — disproving the idea that innovation is inherently a force for equity. Recent advances in facial recognition technology are outpacing current laws and regulations. Our new report provides recommendations for establishing safeguards to address rising concerns about equity, privacy, and civil liberties. "Facial recognition technology generates novel and complex legal challenges and raises a variety of distinct, unsettled legal questions," said Jennifer Mnookin, co-chair of the committee that wrote the report. "It is crucial that governments make tackling these issues a priority." To learn more, visit https://ow.ly/fJ9a50ShrCp. #FacialRecognition #Surveillance #Privacy

"There is a jigsaw puzzle of social good and broader STEM participation just waiting to come together with the right partners." Recent studies have shown that students who see how STEM research contributes to social justice are more likely to persist in it, especially if they belong to groups that are underrepresented in STEM. In a new essay for Issues in Science and Technology, Nilanjana Dasgupta explores how programs and institutions that connect STEM research to social issues can help "diversify participation, encourage persistence, and promote research that improves people’s lives." Actors, public health leaders, and community members recently gathered at the National Academy of Sciences for a dramatic reading of a classic play that touches on contemporary trauma and tensions from the pandemic. "Ultimately, just as in real life, the public health crisis in the play becomes a test of democracy itself," said Jeffery Brown, who reported on the event for PBS. The lack of a clear and consistent definition for Long COVID presents challenges for patients, clinicians, public health practitioners, researchers, and policymakers. Our new report presents a new definition for Long COVID — that it is an infection-associated chronic condition that occurs after COVID-19 infection and is present for at least three months as a continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive disease state that affects one or more organ systems. “Our committee hopes this single definition, crafted with input from across research and patient communities, will help to educate the public about this widespread and highly consequential disease state," said Harvey Fineberg, chair of the authoring committee.
