The Hess Collection & Lions Head Collection

About us

As fifth generation Hess family, Tim and Sabrina consider themselves stewards of the brand and the land. When Donald Hess came to California in the 1970s, he was attracted to California wine and became fascinated with Mount Veeder. Although few in Napa Valley were cultivating vines at elevation, Donald Hess believed the volcanic slopes of Mount Veeder provided the ideal combination of soils and microclimates to yield elegant wines with rich, complex flavors. A pioneer by nature, Donald Hess was determined to defy convention and pursue winemaking at elevation, so in 1978, he established The Hess Collection Winery on the site of one of the region’s oldest wineries. He took the opportunity to marry his two creative passions in life—wine and art—and he established an art gallery within the winery as a means of sharing his private art collection. Donald Hess and his wife, Ursula, met through their shared love of art, and today, Ursula’s daughter, Sabrina, and her husband, Tim, continue the family legacy of sharing wine and art and the family’s ongoing commitment to making both accessible to all. Tim and Sabrina have chosen to call the Napa Valley their home. Tim was raised in Southern Africa and Europe, Sabrina raised in Switzerland and London, but the Napa Valley is where they have found their true calling. They strive to impart their own influence on the winery and support state-of-the-art innovations. Together, they continue to advance The Hess Collection as one of the premier family-owned and family-led companies in Napa Valley, and they are hopeful that someday their children too will carry on the Hess family heritage.

It is with many emotions that we announce that Dave Guffy, Chief Winemaker, will be retiring in May of this year. During his more than 25 years with Hess Persson Estates, Dave essentially defined the style of many of the wines that form the bedrock of the company’s portfolio today. From The Hess Collection to Hess Select, and more recently with the Lions Head portfolio, Dave consistently achieved awards, accolades, and 90+ scores across a broad range of price points from some of the most respected critics in the industry. Dave’s contribution in establishing a very successful Estate Vineyard program in Napa was equally impressive; an achievement that will bear fruit for many years to come.   “I am enormously proud of what Dave has achieved in his career at Hess Persson Estates. There are few, if any, wine portfolios that have this type of consistent excellence across so many price points and varietals, and for such a broad span of time. I am also proud that we have a working environment that attracts and retains someone of Dave's caliber for the bulk of his career, ultimately giving us more than 25 years of dedicated service. I wish him nothing but the best on his well-earned retirement.” -Timothy Persson, CEO   The team Dave has built is now more than ready to carry the torch for the next generation of winemaking. We are excited to announce that Stephanie Pope will be promoted to Senior Winemaker in recognition of her winemaking expertise and more than 15 years of tenure at Hess Persson Estates.    https://lnkd.in/g_MGE9K8

Harvest has arrived with Autumn, giving us a great reason to reflect on a Summer of growth and collaboration. We're proud to have celebrated 5 promotions in the past few months:   Ryan Conner, CSW became our Sales Division Manager, West. Ryan's been with Hess Persson for just over 8 years and in that time has been an excellent leader, with a thorough understanding of the business.   Adam Hanks MBA became our On-Premise Director after overseeing sales growth year after year. He has shown incredible initiative, building luxury distribution and winning key accounts during his 7 years with us.    Mimi (Cox) Storts became VP of Operations. During the last 4 years, Mimi has taken on an ever-expanding role and overseen numerous, high-impact projects — including the install of our state-of-the-art bottling line. Her promotion to VP recognizes her multi-disciplinary skill set and invaluable accomplishments.   Laurelle Turner-Clemons, MSc became Senior Manager of Digital Marketing & E-commerce. Laurelle has taken our digital marketing to the next level — translating marketing strategies into e-grocery sales growth, improved digital shelf presence, and building brands via programmatic and social media advertising. She'll continue to lead digital strategy and uphold best-in-class standards across all channels. Audrey Petoskey became our Digital Marketing Coordinator. Audrey's become an incredible resource and business partner for our teams across the company. Now, she’ll be key in connecting our core marketing strategies to key programs from Retail to DTC. We're grateful for an excuse to raise a glass for our team. Here's to another year of growth!

Another fantastic score to announce: our Small Block Series Malbec 2019 vintage has been rated 96 points by Wine Enthusiast Grown across the summit of Mount Veeder, our estate Malbec has long been a favorite of our guests. But it's also a unique component of the Lion Tamer story. We wrote about Lion Tamer, Cabernet and Malbec, and the youngest chapter of our estate in Wine Enthusiast last year. We're proud to announce The Lion Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 vintage has been rated 97 points and "Cellar Selection". "This beautiful, deep and layered wine grown on the Hess Persson family’s mountaintop property is creamy but structured, bold but nuanced and ready to either drink now or hold for quite a while."
