Lantern has proven to be a powerful program in combating online child sexual exploitation and abuse across platforms, enhancing the detection and response to these threats. We have seen new outcomes that would not have been possible without cross-industry collaboration. For every account, URL, and piece of child sexual abuse material actioned against, Lantern participants work towards a safer future for children online. 💻 Yesterday the Tech Coalition co-hosted a webinar with Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) on the intersections of terrorist and violent extremist online content and child harms. Panelists discussed the evolution of hybridized threat networks targeting children and young people, noting the challenges presented by blurred boundaries between harm types and how various stakeholders are countering this issue. Thank you to GIFCT for hosting this conversation with us and to the panelists for sharing their invaluable expertise. We look forward to continuing these important conversations to protect children online.

Transparency and accountability are essential to industry's efforts to prevent, disrupt and respond to online child sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA). Our 2024 Annual Report includes new data from our latest member survey on their progress and practices to tackle OCSEA. Key insights from 2024: • 44 of 45 members advanced at least one member milepost to strengthen child protection capacity - totaling 122 mileposts advanced across the membership, • 24 members are now fully or partially aligned with our TRUST Framework in their transparency reporting, • 44 members submitted manual and/or API reports to NCMEC, with 24 providing supplemental reports to support investigations, • Use of image and video hashing continued to grow - with 23 members using video hashing technology (up from 21 in 2023), • Classifier technologies were further adopted to detect CSAM across member platforms. For too long, efforts to combat online child sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA) were siloed — allowing offenders to exploit gaps between platforms and across technologies. That’s why we created Lantern, a secure signal-sharing program that enables tech companies to collaborate by sharing threat indicators related to OCSEA. This cross-industry approach helps accelerate enforcement, deepen investigations, and ultimately better protect children. In 2024 alone: • Nearly 300,000 new signals shared —bringing the total to over 1 million total to date • 100,000+ accounts actioned • 7,000+ pieces of CSAM removed • 135,000+ CSEA URLs blocked or removed • Signals helped flag 81 contact offenses and 45 trafficking cases These outcomes are in addition to actions already taken by the original signal uploader, demonstrating how Lantern creates impact that would not have been possible without cross-industry collaboration.
