Last week, we launched MECCA’s Leadership Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto, California, with 40 of our leaders living on campus and learning from world-leading thinkers on topics like leadership, strategy, artificial intelligence (AI), scaling businesses, design thinking, value chain planning, storytelling, stress management and longevity. They even learnt from NASCAR experts about the power of teamwork (… and how to change a tyre in less than 30 seconds). Stanford’s motto is: “Change Lives. Change Organisations. Change the World,” and it delivered. Our leaders approached the week with a love of learning, curiosity, and a sense of adventure, and left with full minds and deeper connections. We’re big believers in the power of education, and MECCA’s long-term partnership with Stanford will provide our senior leaders with life-changing experiences, which will help us have a greater positive impact on our team members, our customers, our brands, and the broader MECCA community. Congratulations to the MECCA x Stanford Class of 2024! 📸 Josh Edelson Photography

It’s the end of the line for the take-make-waste economy. Fortunately, a sustainable model could be just as good for businesses as it is for the planet. Barchi Gillai, associate director of the Value Chain Innovation Initiative at the GSB, says the linear economy is “an unsustainable model. It cannot continue.” In a recent white paper, she and her colleagues find that a growing number of companies agree, and are realizing the urgency of shifting their operations toward circularity. With such a shift, “companies are not only reducing harm but increasing value for society,” says Professor Hau Lee. According to the research, the circular economy could generate up to 4.8 million net new jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean alone by 2030. But businesses can’t do it alone. The report’s authors say achieving a circular economy on a global scale will take collaborative action by many stakeholders, from investors to consumers and policymakers. “A huge amount of work lies ahead, and there are many challenges, but if we all do our share and understand the need for change, we can be successful in our transition from a linear to a circular economy—and leave future generations a better world to live in,” Gillai says. #sustainability #WorldEnvironmentDay https://lnkd.in/gVNxNnVX

The “venture mindset” is how Professor Ilya Strebulaev and Alex Dang, MS ’14, a tech executive and innovation advisor, describe a VC investor’s approach to risk. But as they explain, you don’t have to be chasing tech unicorns to utilize this helpful perspective. In their new book, The Venture Mindset: How to Make Smarter Bets and Achieve Extraordinary Growth, Strebulaev and Dang explain how VCs embrace uncertainty, prioritize conviction over consensus, and view failure as an acceptable cost of pursuing extraordinary growth. As the authors explained in a recent interview with Stanford Business, the venture mindset can be applied to all sorts of business decisions, whether related to investments or not. “The VC mindset is becoming more and more useful and likely will dominate — or should dominate — a number of industries for a while,” Strebulaev says. Beyond business, Dang says the venture mindset can even have benefits for one’s personal life. “I now believe more in experimentation and in making big bets,” he says. “I click the send button way more often than before because I now expect that many of my requests, sometimes wild requests, will be simply rejected or never answered.” As the business world evolves faster than ever, Strebulaev and Dang say adopting this innovative approach to decision-making and risk-taking may be the key to staying ahead of the curve. #VC https://lnkd.in/ggBwm3DX
