Standard Carbon has a simple solution: use inverter-based renewable power to create synthetic natural gas for baseload synchronous generation. This solves the interconnection backlog and enables the economy to run 100% on renewables even when there are clouds and no wind.

Given the urgent need for more efficient interconnection processes and the challenges posed by the current reliance on lithium-ion batteries, Standard Carbon’s innovative approach not only complements the existing grid infrastructure but could also spearhead the transition towards a grid that is 100% reliant on renewable energy and storage.

This is how Standard Carbon's power to methane technology makes money. We take essentially free renewable electricity that is not needed, of which there is an ample and ever growing amount, and turn it into dispatchable gas fired generation that can be sold at the time of greatest profitability. Arbitrage: buy low, sell high.
Data from CAISO https://lnkd.in/eTTM_QgF The bottom chart gives the monthly growth in curtailment from 2014 through to last month (which was a record). Most of the curtailment is solar. Why don't we use this energy? The opportunity is that there is a lot of excess energy to use (e.g. about 2.6 TWh of curtailed solar in 2023) but the challenge is that it is mostly at specific times of year and times of the day (see top chart for 2023 solar curtailment). So we need to size the infrastructure investment to capture the max hour in the year to capture and reuse all this energy. But that in turn would mean this infrastructure would have a low capacity factor / utilization. The peak curtailment hours are in March/April between 1pm and 3pm, if we sized something to capture this amount of energy, the average annual utilization of this infrastructure would be 11% (if it was just run off curtailed energy based on the 2023 distribution). That is a tough utilization number for anything that requires a lot of capital investment. And even tougher if there is much in the way of annual fixed carrying cost. This kind of detail really matters a lot and sometimes is glossed over when making future projections.

Day ahead electricity markets in the UK are negative for 12 hours on Saturday! Lithium-ion batteries can't even begin to correct the market failure that is on display here, because they lack the physical capacity to soak up such a titanic quantity of surplus renewable electricity. Only long duration energy storage deployed in a scalable fashion can eliminate negative electricity pricing and thereby enable renewable energy to fulfill its promise: Standard Carbon
