Although it has been recently recognized as an official holiday in the United States, there's still an incredible amount of teaching that needs to be done around the history of #Juneteenth. When did you first learn about the holiday?

Though celebrated by Black communities across Texas and the wider south since 1885, it wasn’t until 2021 that #Juneteenth became an official holiday in the US. And while there's still work to do to shed light on its history, we can start by educating ourselves and our community.

On June 1, 1996, over 300,000 people rallied in the Nation’s capital for Stand for Children Day. Joined by movement leaders like Rosa Parks and Marian Wright Edelman, thousands of people took to the street to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the rights of children and demand our political leaders work to ensure and expand those rights. That rally would go on to inspire the founding of Stand for Children, bringing together educators, parents, activists, and community members to advocate for children every day.

The way we currently teach AAPI histories (when we do) leads to real world harm. When Asian American and Pacific Islander students see their community members exclusively painted as a threat when mentioned, and otherwise disappeared from the rest of their textbooks, that causes serious mental and emotional harm. On this day in 1954, the US Supreme Court ruled the state-sanctioned segregation of public schools unconstitutional in the case Brown v. Board of Education, marking a crucial step towards educational equity. Brown v. Board of Education reshaped American education, but the fight for equity in public education is ongoing. The continuous efforts from parents, students, educators, and allies were essential in ensuring desegregation orders were implemented post-ruling. Achieving our mission for an equitable public education will require that same unwavering commitment.
