Building the world's most accessible, widely distributed newswire

About us

Stacker is a new media company excited by the future of journalism. Every day, our efforts center on developing new and more sustainable ways to produce, distribute, and fund great storytelling that contextualizes our world and drives impact for news publishers big and small. We do this through a number of ways—from our tech-forward storytelling method and freely accessible newswire, to offering a structured avenue for non-publisher organizations to participate and contribute to quality journalism. Our ultimate mission is to empower the world’s publishers: through a commitment to provide free access to great storytelling and by championing innovation in how journalism is done, we enable our national- and local-scale publishing partners to engage their audiences and focus on their own original reporting. As a bootstrapped company, we’re a resourceful team focused on building an inclusive, equitable culture around shared values of integrity, ownership, and collaboration. Building for the future is reflected in the way we work: we are remote-first, embrace flexible schedules, and offer competitive benefits and perks including unlimited vacation, an employee equity program, heath & dental coverage, and 401(k) matching. We’re always looking for curious, media-minded thinkers to join the team. We encourage women, people of color, veterans, people with disabilities and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.

🤔 What do brands like Red Bull, American Express and Marriott Hotels have in common? A decade ago, they all decided to become their own publishers, creating content to directly engage potential customers on their owned channels. This move was a reaction to the emergence of social media and the limitations of conventional PR. 🚀 The Journey For the 3 brands mentioned above, the strategy was a success. But many brands struggled with sustainability and ROI, leading to numerous shutdowns of content initiatives. Today, however, brand publishing is experiencing a renaissance, fueled by lessons learned from past challenges. 🔍 What’s Different Now? Today, successful brand publishing has 3 important components: Distribution Focus, Strategic ROI and Measured Investment. Over the last decade or so, we’ve seen a number of new entrants to the newswire space. But the lines have certainly blurred. Are they newswires? Collaboratives? A little bit of both? The most common denominator I see is an ethos of openness and accessibility, allowing other newsrooms to publish their stories. The Texas Tribune, CalMatters, Word In Black, and Rural News Network from Institute for Nonprofit News are just a few of the many taking this approach. Each of them are funded in unique ways that enable free (or lightly restricted) republishing of the journalism their teams painstakingly produce. Stacker has been a free newswire from Day 1, open to all local newsrooms across the U.S. and Canada and with homegrown technology that helps us analyze the reach and impact of each story. (Ping me if you want a look under the hood at our analytics platform!) Full writeup in the comments on how Stacker and other newswires/collaboratives are moving local journalism forward at no additional cost to local publishers. #contentdistribution #newswires #syndication #megaconference #25thISOJ
