Congratulations to Tara Beardsley Murphy, Grade 7 and 8 teacher at Winter Hill Community Innovation School. She teaches the Newcomers Academy for students just starting their English language learning journey. Ms. Beardsley Murphy wrote a successful Tufts Community grant that will fund robotics and engineering projects to support learning and demonstrating climate change. Pictured are Ms. Beardsley Murphy and several students, who attended a breakfast on Tufts campus to received the award.

Congratulations to World Language Supervisor Dr. Lisa Machnik, who has just been awarded “Teacher of the Year” by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).  The AATSP writes that they were “particularly impressed by your service to the Communication Review Panel for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education World Language Frameworks, your commitment to equitable access to all students, your administrative work in the areas of student certification and assessment, your support of the less commonly taught languages, especially Portuguese. Also noteworthy is your teaching of Portuguese to Spanish speakers, and the Growth Mindset that drives all your classroom work.”  Great job, Ms. Machnik!

Interested in volunteering with your best friend? Now’s your chance! Somerville Public School’s is partnering with Dog B.O.N.E.S. of Massachusetts to offer screening and certification workshops for interested dog owners. Workshops will be held on the first three Saturdays in June (June 1, 8, 15) from 9:00am-10:30am at the Arthur D. Today is the start of National Teacher Appreciation Week! Through the Entry Planning process, we gathered consistent data. Students expressed a joy in learning and a feeling that their teachers adapt to their needs, while families celebrate the expertise and quality of the educators teaching their children. We will see a total solar eclipse today, Monday, April 8. Please remember, you should never stare directly at the sun without special eclipse glasses as it can be damaging to the eye. In our area, the eclipse will begin at 2:15 p.m. and reach its peak at 3:30pm. Locally, we will be able to see around 90% of the eclipse. Since the eclipse will coincide with school dismissal on Monday, we strongly encourage families and staff to remind students not to look at the eclipse without special eyewear.  We will not see another total solar eclipse again until 2045 in the United States.
