The number of nuclear verdicts, or verdicts worth $10 million or more, dropped off significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic but quickly rebounded to near-record highs by the third quarter of 2021, according to a new study authored by Shook Partner Cary Silverman and Senior Counsel Christopher Appel and published by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform. “Nuclear Verdicts: An Update on Trends, Causes, and Solutions” analyzes nuclear verdicts in personal injury and wrongful death cases between 2013 and 2022 and highlights national and state trends, the causes of nuclear verdicts, real-world implications and solutions. Shook's Product Liability Litigation Practice Group received several accolades in Chambers and Partners' 2024 USA rankings. The practice was rated Band 1 nationwide in Product Liability: Automotive and Product Liability: Tobacco along with earning "The Elite" status for the Product Liability & Mass Torts category. Associate Joseph Zaleski will moderate a discussion in anticipation of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in SEC v. Jarkesy for an event held by the American Bar Association Environment, Energy, and Resources Section. Partner James Devaney presents at the Hispanic National Bar Association Intellectual Property Law Institute on June 5. The IPLI is a weeklong immersive program that features leading practitioners teaching a select group of law students about the latest developments in intellectual property and tech law. James presents "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence" during an afternoon of the program hosted at Shook's Washington, D.C., office. Teaching intellectual property law to law students is not unusual for James, who serves as an adjunct faculty member at University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and Washburn University School of Law. He has also taught courses in electrical and computer engineering as well as CLE courses for patent attorneys.
