Founded in 1923, San Francisco Opera is a nonprofit dedicated to fostering innovative art for the 21st century.

About us

Founded in 1923, San Francisco Opera is the oldest surviving opera company on the West Coast and a leader in arts education and innovation. It all started, according to legend, over a game of poker. In his travels across the United States, the Neapolitan conductor Gaetano Merola had noticed that San Francisco audiences hungered for opera. Over a card game in the North Beach neighborhood, an idea took hold: Why not give San Francisco its very own resident opera company? Merola rallied local leaders and music lovers, and soon — on September 26, 1923 — the curtain rose on a new beacon in the art world: San Francisco Opera. Starting with that very first performance of “La Bohème,” San Francisco Opera established itself as destination for world-class talent and incomparable artistry. Artists like Leontyne Price and Birgit Nilsson would arrive to make their American stage debuts. New operas like “Dead Man Walking” and “Appomattox” would take shape under its proscenium. And new technology like supertitles and simulcasts would be adopted early on to make opera more accessible for everyone. Matthew Shilvock leads the company as its seventh general director, having assumed the role in August 2016. He succeeds company founder Gaetano Merola (1923-1953), Kurt Herbert Adler (1953-1981), Terence A. McEwen (1982–1988), Lotfi Mansouri (1988–2001), Pamela Rosenberg (2001–2005) and David Gockley (2006–2016). He is joined by the leadership of music director Eun Sun Kim, who follows in the footsteps of previous music directors including Sir John Pritchard (1982-1989), Sir Donald Runnicles (1992-2009) and Nicola Luisotti (2009-2018). Come visit us in our historic 1932 home, the War Memorial Opera House, the first municipally owned opera house in the United States — and one of the last Beaux-Arts buildings to be built in the country. Or find us out and about in our community, where we hold free events like Opera in the Park. To learn more, please visit sfopera.com.

Backstage with Matthew: Anticipating Innocence is out now. "Innocence is a work that touches on issues so present in the world around us, not only in themes around gun violence, but also around bullying, the impacts of trauma, social media, and many others … There are moments on the opera stage that stay with one for all time, such is the intensity of the emotional experience. For me, Innocence has been one of those moments and I cannot wait to share it with you. It is a piece that resonates powerfully for long-time opera goers and brand-new opera goers alike – it is a complete immersion into a topic that is sadly far too prevalent in our world, but in a way that gives us a different entry point into understanding the many facets and implications of this extreme trauma." San Francisco Opera has a storied history of bringing important new works to the stage. Pictured below are scenes from three of San Francisco Opera’s most important American premieres: Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites in 1957, Strauss and Hoffmannsthal’s Die Frau ohne Schatten in 1959, and Janáček’s The Makropulos Case in 1966. Be there when Kaija Saariaho, Sofi Oksanen, and Aleksi Barrière’s Innocence makes its American premiere this summer. It was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives. But just as Stela and Tuomas toast their marriage, a devastating secret reemerges that threatens to drive the couple apart—and expose the guilt Tuomas bears in an unconscionable crime. Thanks to all who joined us for a post-opera talk-back, delving deeper into the powerful narrative of enslaved Islamic scholar, Omar Ibn Said. Audience members had the privilege of hearing firsthand the poignant experiences of our talented cast and the creative minds shaping this Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece. Post-opera talk-backs continue for the remaining performances of Omar. The stories behind the scenes are just as captivating as the ones on stage! Audience members also had the opportunity to see a beautiful exhibition created by the Diversity, Equity, and Community department that gives some insight into who Omar was and where he came from. And our Muslim community members were able to practice their faith before the performance and during intermission at designated areas in the north and south side lobbies on the Grand Tier level of the opera house. Only two performances of Omar remain! Photos: Matthew Washburn

On April 22, The Opera In You finale unfolded, weaving together stories from the heart during our Centennial Season. From a woman's journey in 1960s San Francisco to a mother's resilience, and a young man's daring escapade into the world of Pavarotti, each of our storytellers painted a unique canvas of experiences. San Francisco Opera Chorus member Erin Neff and San Francisco Poet Laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin added a poetic rhythm to the narratives. A huge shoutout to San Francisco Public Library for helping us craft an afternoon filled with emotions and artistic brilliance!
