    🚨 For public SaaS companies, NRR has been a real headache. Just look at the chart below – it seems like it's causing pretty much all of their growth issues. So, why is NRR taking such a nosedive? -Well, in times of economic downturn, customers become a lot more selective about the value they're getting for their money. - Plus, competition is fiercer than ever, with new players popping up every year. What does this mean for you? 📣 It means you absolutely can't afford to lose any more customers. Losing them because they're unhappy is bad enough, but losing even the happy ones just because you forgot about them? That's a nightmare. With layoffs and budget cuts happening left and right, having a solid renewal strategy is crucial. You need a renewal process/strategy that's easy to track and follows the best practices. That means also using automation where it makes sense and having your team step in when things get a bit tricky. You cannot afford to keep delaying optimizing your renewal strategy.     News Flash: Declining NRR 📉 explains 100% of the fall-off in growth last year. At least that's what the math says for public SaaS. Check out my chart (medians for 2022 to 2023) 👇 - Growth declined from 29% to 20% - NRR declined from 120% to 111% In theory, NRR reflects “net growth from the existing customer base”... And so with some simple subtraction, we see that NRR caused 100% of the problems…😣 It’s a seductively simple, yet troubling, argument.. (perhaps too simple…more on that later) But what about the silver lining: Growth from new logos “held up” last year! That’s good. Right? Nah…. Sure, it “held up”... After getting its butt kicked in 2022! At 9%, new logo growth is downright anemic! Especially troubling given these companies are spending ~40% of revenues on S&M. But that’s another story for another post. Now about those concerns re: the seductive simplicity of "NRR is the source of all your problems" math… some caveats/words of caution: 1. Public Company NRR Definitions are “crafty”. Beware.  2. My ARR growth numbers use last-quarter annualized data (same as Meritech).  It’s directionally accurate, but not true ARR (sorry purists) 3. NRR and growth calculations are rarely “in sync”. (My favorite example: Snowflake in 2023, with 32% growth and 131% NRR – ain’t no way they sold almost no new logos last year!) Enuf said! Let’s just enjoy the seductive simplicity🤗 PS….
