According to the latest research, it's estimated that >$4.3bn was returned to US Consumers through mobile device trade-in programs in 2023 (13% increase YoY), with each traded device carrying an average value of >$142. In Q4, 2023 alone it's estimated that trade-in programs put $1.6bn back in the pockets of US consumers (25% increase YoY). iPhone residual values continue to be market leading, based on an average TIV of $217, compared to an average TIV of $90 on Android devices. The trade-in of Wearables, Consoles and Hearables has seen strong YoY growth, as consumers are beginning to recognize the resale potential of devices in these categories. On a purchasing front meanwhile, the market for used devices is outshining that for brand-new devices, growing by 2.9% YoY compared with a 4.4% decline in shipments of new mobile devices. The secondary market is blossoming as the population becomes more aware of circularity, residual values and how to access resale & recycling channels. That said, we have a long way to go as we look to extend the useful life of our connected devices and their component parts, whilst maximizing the lifetime value we get from each device we consume.
