Reddit surged to popularity during the meme-stock mania that took hold during the pandemic. Retail investors, primed by stimulus checks and low interest rates, plowed into the stock market, relying on “r/wallstreetbets” and other forums to discuss their investment strategies. The company prepared to go public, only to shelve its plan after the Federal Reserve started hiking rates in 2022, causing the stock market to crater. Two years later, Reddit debuted on the New York Stock Exchange, and its share price has risen since. CFO Drew Vollero joined the firm in 2021 following earlier stints at Mattel, Taco Bell and Snapchat. He is working to grow Reddit’s business, including advertising, data licensing and its new search tool, Reddit Answers. We talked about the benefit of “mock” earnings, Google, what he is hearing from advertisers, and his favorite subreddit.
