We are a spiritual and political home for Californians. "Speak up for the voiceless and seek justice for the oppressed."
About us
PICO California is a multi-racial, multi-faith state network comprising ten local affiliates who organize across 18 counties, representing 500 congregations and nearly 650,000 Californians. Our mission is to catalyze faith-based and spiritually-centered people power in California to create systemic change for the most vulnerable so that all Californians thrive. We are a network of organizations that, through community organizing, builds power across race, faith, and class with congregations and faith-based, spiritually-rooted individuals who take action for racial and economic justice in California. Over the past 30 years, our organizing and policy advocacy has resulted in increased investments in healthcare, education, and restorative justice, safe neighborhoods free from gun violence, affordable housing, support for those aspiring to American citizenship, and other programs and services that are critical for families. At PICO California, we: Invest in the formation of people. We teach people about the power structures around them, the power they harness within, and the power of mobilizing others to create better living conditions for themselves and their communities. Reclaim faith in the public sphere. Faith should not be synonymous with bigotry, greed, and othering. We change hearts and minds under the premise that the core of belief is love, justice, and dedication to the dignity and worth of every person. Commit to an ethic of love. The means of inclusion and belonging are as important as the ends of liberation. We believe in salvation and reconciliation, not victory for the sake of power. We see the stories of others in ourselves.

This year, the PICO California network embarked on a statewide campaign to address this massive and growing housing affordability and homelessness crisis. We invite you to read our 2023 Impact Report, which details the success of our network this year: https://lnkd.in/gbhCWE9g Our broad, consistent, and powerful organizing ensured that state representatives heard our voices loud and clear about the urgent need to protect renters and prevent homelessness. As a result, we helped to pass three pieces of legislation that have the potential to impact over two million families: Streamlining the state approval process for affordable housing development on faith institution and school land; Protecting low-wage renters against no-fault evictions and closing common eviction loopholes; Limiting the ability of local governments to adopt local ordinances, rules, policies, programs, or regulations that penalize a tenant's interaction with law enforcement, or to mandate landlords to implement such policies or procedures. We are in awe of the grassroots leaders across PICO California who not only have a vision for radically inclusive and equitable communities, but who every day devote their hearts, minds, hands, and feet to building it through the beautiful ministry of community organizing. In faith, love power, PICO California

We are honored to announce that PICO California has been selected as an inaugural grantee of PivotCA, a first of its kind partnership between organizations and funders. After an incredibly competitive selection process full of powerhouse community organizations, PICO California is grateful to move forward with PIVOT to innovate and build political power among communities of color, advance racial justice, and win lasting systems change in California. It is an exciting moment to witness as the power of our faith communities is not only being recognized but truly tapped into. This grant will allow us to reach into communities and congregations of faithful Californians ready to see prophetic change to California's systems of harm. We must also take a moment to thank our fellow grantees and steering committee members for their work and dedication to building a California of true belonging. We look forward to our work together in the coming years. Read more about our fellow grantees and the mission of PIVOT here: pivotca.org ! #PeopleFaithPower #DevoutnDiverse

We are honored to have the support of the James Irvine Foundation as we continue building a California where wealth, opportunity, and dignity isn’t in the hands of a few but a reality for all Californians.
This #LaborDay, we are spotlighting some of the organizations we support who are continuing the legacy of historic worker rights movement: End Poverty in California (EPIC), PICO California, Love Never Fails, Inland Empire Black Worker Center (IEBWC), California Coalition for Worker Power, Just San Bernardino Collaborative (Just SB), and Flintridge Center. Our partners ensure that what Labor Day commemorates – the impact of workers coming together for better working conditions – becomes a reality for all #California workers. They do this by changing the poverty narrative, creating an economy of belonging, recognizing the unique needs of individuals, using a holistic approach, addressing systemic barriers and anti-Black discrimination, and building community power and pathways out of justice involvement. This year, the PICO California network reaffirmed its commitment to building faith-based and spiritually centered people-power to create systemic change for the most vulnerable so that all Californians thrive. Here’s what we've done and accomplished in the first half of the year! In the second half of 2023, we will continue to build on this momentum as we continue to build the power we need to create the California we deserve. Thank you for being a part of our devout and diverse community and for being on this journey with us. There is much to do but we have done much together.
