Huff Post recently came out with an article discussing what it is like being over the age of 50 and applying for jobs. At 57, Donna Kopman has spent months applying to over 300 jobs after being laid off, with little success so far. Her story sadly resonates with many older workers facing age discrimination and systemic biases in today's job market. The stark reality? If you're over 50 and lose your job, it takes significantly longer to get rehired - if you can find an opportunity paying comparably to your previous role. Automatic resume screeners can filter out older candidates based on graduation dates or work history gaps. And ageist mindsets persist, with employers making unfair assumptions about older workers being inflexible or technologically inept. To overcome these barriers, older job seekers are going to painstaking lengths to appear younger on paper. Tactics include omitting graduation years, not listing employment dates, and even dyeing away grey hair before interviews. All to avoid being instantly judged and passed over due to age. Beyond application hurdles, the financial toll weighs heavily too. With savings being drained for healthcare costs and retirement postponed, many are forced to take lower-paying roles or piecemeal "gig" work just to get by after prolonged unemployment. Yet research shows older workers are an invaluable asset. They're less likely to job-hop, have higher performance ratings, and offer unmatched institutional knowledge to share with younger colleagues. Organizations embracing multigenerational teams foster richer collaboration and idea exchange. So if you're leading hiring efforts, pause before making biased judgments about older candidates' capabilities and potential. Be open to transferable skills and diverse perspectives that experiencd professionals bring. Don't rule out a stellar applicant just because of age. And to older job seekers feeling dejected: Don't lose hope. Build supportive networks, leverage career services, and get creative about making connections. Strategically highlight the vast expertise and wisdom you've accumulated over decades. As Donna reminds us, "People over 50 are not ready to be put out to pasture. We have so much experience and personal learnings to be shared." The workforce only stands to gain from tapping into this often-overlooked talent pool. It's time to rethink age discrimination and start giving tenured candidates the fair consideration they deserve. iHire's new research report "Gen Z in the Workforce: Decoding a New Generation of Job Seekers" offers a comprehensive look at the behaviors, goals, and challenges faced by this emerging talent pool. As Gen Z continues entering the job market, understanding their unique perspectives is crucial. Key Takeaways: 🔍 Overcoming Stereotypes: 34.4% of Gen Z believe negative stereotypes, such as being entitled or lacking commitment, could affect their job prospects. However, they are also seen by employers as tech-savvy and socially conscious. 💻 Skill Confidence: While Gen Z feels confident in their workplace etiquette and resume writing skills, 58.3% of employers suggest improvement is needed in interviewing and communication abilities. 🤖 AI Concerns: 33.2% fear AI may replace jobs, yet 42.7% haven't used AI tools like ChatGPT for resumes or cover letters. 📈 Career Aspirations: 69.3% have a dream job they hope to attain within 10 years, prioritizing positive environments, fair pay, and work-life balance over managerial roles. 🏢 Work Preferences: Contrary to the "Zoomer" label, most Gen Z prefer in-person (55.8%) or hybrid (26.6%) setups over fully remote work (17.6%). The report underscores the importance of mutual understanding—employers adapting to Gen Z's values while candidates grasp workplace expectations. Bridging this gap is essential for fostering a thriving multi-generational workforce. Check out the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/exAryz-P and share your thoughts!
