✴️ The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal transformation is underway! Governor Kathy Hochul and NYC Office of the Mayor Eric Adams announced the start of construction on the transformation of South Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a major offshore wind hub. Celebrated by NYSERDA, Equinor, New York City Economic Development Corporation, and other federal, state, city, and local officials, this 73-acre project will be the largest dedicated offshore wind port in the U.S.! Not only will it support the Empire Wind 1 project by staging and pre-assembling turbine components, but it’s also designed for future offshore wind-related projects. The 54-turbine Empire Wind 1 project will be the first offshore wind project to plug directly into the New York City grid, providing enough renewable energy for 500,000 New York homes, with a target to deliver first power in late 2026. https://on.ny.gov/3Vla8VI

Today was an incredibly exciting day for the Sunset Park Community, the offshore wind industry and all New Yorkers! New York City Economic Development Corporation broke ground on the first dedicated offshore wind port in NYC, the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, in partnership with Equinor. SBMT will house the staging & assembly of Equinor's OSW turbines, their long-term operations and maintenance hub, and a substation to allow interconnection into the NYC grid of their 810MW Empire Wind 1 project, which will power ~500K homes! Countless EDCers have worked over the course of the last 5+ years to bring this project to life. And the Sunset Park community has advocated for decades to bring uses like OSW to the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in support of a just transition. I feel so privileged to be part of a project of this scale and impact! #justtransition #greeneconomy https://lnkd.in/ev8Wv_uh
