Arthur “Art” Gillespie, a former Chicago police captain, underwent a successful double-lung transplant at Northwestern Medicine after being told he couldn’t be helped due to damage from cancer in one lung and from COVID-19 in the other. “Despite being told ‘no’ by other doctors, Arthur kept searching for answers. I feel honored that we were able to help him,” says Ankit Bharat, MD, chief of Thoracic Surgery and director of Northwestern Medicine Canning Thoracic Institute, who performed the transplant. #NMBetter

The Legacy Society is a group of generous donors who have made a planned commitment to Northwestern Medicine. I am humbled by and tremendously grateful to every member of the society for their commitment to making a difference for future generations by supporting breakthrough medicine. Thank you to Holman Driving and the Team NM volunteers from Northwestern Medicine who participated in the latest GoBabyGo event at Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital! During the event, 77 volunteers helped modify miniature cars to accommodate the accessibility needs of eight children so they can enjoy a new sense of freedom — and a whole lot of fun. For several of the children, this was the first time they were able to move themselves in a toy vehicle. We are proud to help empower people of all ages to move, play and enjoy life! #NMBetter

We’re proud to provide better stroke care closer to where you live and work. In May, we celebrated Stroke Awareness Month at Northwestern Medicine Field with the Kane County Cougars. Three stroke survivors treated at Northwestern Medicine threw out the first pitch, and Northwestern Medicine staff members were on hand to educate game attendees about stroke symptoms. Attendees also got an up-close look at our Mobile Stroke Unit, which was parked on-site. #NMBetter
