We’re thrilled to announce that Maia Hibbett and Liam Quigley are joining our newsroom. Maia will lead the People & Power team, overseeing our coverage of city and state politics as well as the systems and processes that fuel local democracy. This is a pivotal leadership role as we head into the November general election and a mayoral election in 2025. She comes to us from New York Focus and The Intercept. Liam, our new parks and sanitation reporter, will cover issues including New York City’s war on rats, efforts to remove mountains of trash bags from sidewalks, and access to green spaces and public beaches. He was most recently a contributing reporter for the New York Daily News. https://lnkd.in/e4ZjHcEz

Incredibly proud of the WNYC / Gothamist news team on being honored with a New York Press Club Award for “Imminent Danger: One Doctor and a Trail of Injured Women.” This five-part investigative audio series tracked the career of an OB-GYN who lost his New York State medical license for gross negligence, gross incompetence, and obtaining a license fraudulently, but was able to practice in other states, and was eventually re-instated in the Bronx. The series includes heart wrenching stories from women who suffered under his care, and exposed how doctors with a record of negligence still manage to continue practicing medicine. Congratulations to reporter Karen Shakerdge, editor Christopher Werth, producer Ave Carrillo, sound designer Jared Paul, and fact checker Ethan Corey for this important work.
