We connect young people to the natural world in nature's best classroom—our national parks!
About us
Environmental science in nature’s classroom NatureBridge provides hands-on environmental science programs for young people. Our multi-day programs take place outdoors in the magnificence of nature’s classroom, where students are immersed in the wonder and science of our national parks in Yosemite, Golden Gate, Olympic and Prince William Forest. Founded as Yosemite Institute in 1971, today NatureBridge welcomes more than 700 schools and 30,000 students and teachers annually to our four campuses. After more than 50 years of teaching and inspiring students, NatureBridge has provided life-changing experiences for more than one million participants and is a national leader in the field of environmental education. Providing access for all students NatureBridge environmental science programs are inclusive. We work intentionally to bring students from underserved communities to our programs and to offer culturally relevant and transformative experiences in our national parks. Almost 50% of our participating schools receive scholarship support and more than 30% of our students are from underrepresented communities. The NatureBridge business model is fueled by a powerful combination of earned and contributed revenue. More than 70% of our revenue comes from the tuition associated with our environmental science programs and the remaining 30% comes from donations. As a 501(c)(3) we rely on generous donations to advance our mission, to provide scholarships, and to support new curricula development and program extensions into classrooms. Making an impact Our staff of environmental science educators is at the core of our organization. Working with small groups of elementary, middle, and high school students, our educators bring science to life in national parks through engaging environmental science lessons paired with walks, hikes, scrambles, explorations and overnight backcountry expeditions to the best spots in each park.

I am a firm believer that getting into nature is absolutely critical for personal well-being AND to foster the collective environmental stewardship that we need to save our planet. That is why I’m incredibly excited to join the National NatureBridge Board of Directors, where I get to work with Phillip Kilbridge, Susan S. Boren, and the talented NatureBridge team to build on a 50+ year legacy of providing kids (1.6 million and counting!) with hands-on environmental science programs in our National Parks. Last week, I participated in my first Board meeting after attending an inspiring “An Evening Outside” event at the Golden Gate campus in the Marin Headlands, where over 430 supporters celebrated the impact that NatureBridge has had, raising over $1.1M to support the NatureBridge mission. We heard from keynote speaker, Britt Wray, PhD (author of #generationdread) about how programs like NatureBridge (that get kids off their phones and outdoors to learn about nature and science) are critical to addressing the #climateanxiety and broader mental health issues felt by today’s youth. So proud to contribute to this organization, and super excited about the road ahead!

We are saddened to learn of the passing of William (Bill) Anders, one of the members of the Apollo 8 mission and a founding board member for NatureBridge, formerly the Yosemite Institute. Bill lived a life of remarkable achievement and impact in the fields of science, exploration, and business, and we will be forever grateful for the work he did to help establish and guide our organization. We send our condolences to Bill‘s beloved wife Valerie, and his family and friends during this difficult time. If you would like to learn more about Bill's impact on NatureBridge, please click here: https://lnkd.in/gWVY-8PQ

We didn't find the mythical pot of gold at the end of this rainbow, but this view was reward enough! 🌈 Earlier this week, a NatureBridge staff member captured this photo of a rare rainbow spanning the shores of Lake Crescent at our campus in Olympic National Park. Our national park classrooms never fail to provide students with unique and memorable opportunities to discover more about the wonder and science of nature! 📸 Carrie Anderson #outdoorlearning #NatureEducation #EnvironmentalStewardship #NatureLovers #YouthInNature #ExploreOutdoors #SustainableFuture #HandsOnLearning #NatureConservation #ProtectOurParks

I recently joined the Mid-Atlantic Regional Board for NatureBridge. Some of you may be familiar with the programs they run at Prince William Forest--kids from Mundo Verde PCS and DC Bilingual PCS have participated over the years along with many other DC schools. We are running a campaign to provide support to students from DC and Prince William County--so every kid can experience the benefits of nature and learn science at the same time. For many of the kids at Mundo Verde, this program was the first time they had an overnight experience in nature. I'm committed to supporting NatureBridge to bring more kids outside. Please click if you are interested in supporting this amazing program!

Trivia Monday! Did you know that Barnes Creek, the major tributary of Lake Crescent at our NatureBridge Olympic campus, is the spawning ground for the endemic Crescenti trout? (Endemic species are those that are found only in a single, defined geographic location.) NatureBridge students conduct science investigations on Barnes Creek to assess if the creek has suitable water quality conditions for the fish that live in Olympic National Park. 🐟 #outdoorlearning #NatureEducation #EnvironmentalStewardship #NatureLovers #YouthInNature #ExploreOutdoors #SustainableFuture #HandsOnLearning #NatureConservation #ProtectOurParks

Earlier this week, students at our Golden Gate campus searched for mole crabs on Rodeo Beach—with lots of success! 🦀 As our environmental science educators like to remind our students, "The more you look, the more you see!" #outdoorlearning #NatureEducation #EnvironmentalStewardship #NatureLovers #YouthInNature #ExploreOutdoors #SustainableFuture #HandsOnLearning #NatureConservation #ProtectOurParks
