We need to find and protect key climate refuges to give ocean biodiversity a chance to thrive—even in the climate crisis. Areas like this on the Blake Plateau need permanent protections, as its rich ecosystems could help repopulate ocean areas with marine life, says NRDC's Next Wave Oceans Fellow, Leysha Caraballo.

The Earth's Best Defense
About us
NRDC is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. Worth Magazine has named NRDC one of America's 100 best charities, and the Wise Giving Alliance of the Better Business Bureau reports that NRDC meets its highest standards for accountability and use of donor funds. NRDC was founded in 1970 by a group of law students and attorneys at the forefront of the environmental movement. NRDC lawyers helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws. Today, our staff of more than 300 lawyers, scientists and policy experts -- a MacArthur "genius" award-winner among them -- work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Beijing. The New York Times calls us "One of the nation's most powerful environmental groups." The National Journal says we're "A credible and forceful advocate for stringent environmental protection." With the support of our members and online activists, NRDC works to solve the most pressing environmental issues we face today: curbing global warming, getting toxic chemicals out of the environment, moving America beyond oil, reviving our oceans, saving wildlife and wild places, and helping China go green.

Boosted by federal climate and infrastructure investments, electric vehicle sales have tripled since 2021, and EV chargers will hit 500,000 by 2030. These critical policies are giving our planet a fighting chance to avoid the worst of the climate crisis. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/e5VpV8jk.

One year ago, the Supreme Court gutted the Clean Water Act’s protections for wetlands and other waters. This decimated long-established safeguards and put our clean water and precious endangered species at risk. The fight is not over. NRDC has been working hard—both nationally and in the states—to reinstate core protections. Fortunately, leaders are stepping up, like in Colorado where legislation was recently passed. Read more from Jon Devine, NRDC’s director of freshwater ecosystems.

The climate crisis is endangering our health and forcing more people to pay for costly medical care, and that burden is falling most heavily on underserved communities. The 2022 climate law is already helping to cut the pollution that not only fuels climate change but harms people’s health. Let’s keep up the momentum to give our people and our planet a fighting chance. Visit https://lnkd.in/e5VpV8jk to learn more.

As our ocean warms, parts of the Blake Plateau will provide crucial refuge for deep-sea reef-building corals and other marine life. We need to make sure it’s protected NOW—before polluting industries take root. Urge the Biden administration to conserve the Blake Plateau: https://lnkd.in/eiQKE-6t

Wetlands cover 6% of earth’s land but provide habitat for 40% of all wildlife. From housing more than one third of the plants and animals on the Endangered Species List to filtering our drinking water, wetlands do more for the planet than you’d think.
