An NIA-funded study found that receiving a dementia diagnosis is linked to a shorter lifespan for both diagnosed and undiagnosed twins. The study examined data from participants in the Swedish Twin Registry, a cohort study of more than 45,000 Swedish twins. Data was analyzed in two ways: first, by comparing twins with dementia to unrelated individuals without dementia, and then by comparing twins with dementia to their twin siblings without a diagnosis. The NIA National Advisory Council on Aging (NACA) approved three newly proposed research concepts! While making it to the cleared concept stage doesn’t necessarily guarantee a future award application mechanism or contract solicitation, many do eventually result in a funding opportunity. While neuroscientists have learned a great deal about the underlying brain networks that sustain awareness, surprisingly little has been known about the networks that keep us awake. Now, a team of NIH-funded researchers has mapped the connectivity of a neural network they suggest is essential for wakefulness, or arousal, in the human brain. Learn more about the findings that suggest stimulating this key arousal hub may hold promise for helping people recover from a coma: https://lnkd.in/eZmENipm #NIHAging #NIHFunded #Conciousness #NeuralNetwork
