Congratulations to our Head of School, Danielle Heard, on her upcoming Board position with the Association of Independent Schools in New England!
Earlier this week the AISNE Board of Directors met for the last time for this school year, finalizing plans for the coming year and preparing the organization for our leadership transition this July, when Sara Wilson (pictured) takes the reins from AISNE’s current Executive Director Claire Leheny. The board meeting was a time to thank and say farewell to our outgoing board members—Jonathan Douglas of Berwick Academy, Eric Chapman of Pine Cobble School, Brendan Largay of Belmont Day School, Dr. Monica Palmer of Milton Academy, and Brian Thomas of Proctor Academy—and reflect on the past nine years of Claire’s leadership. A special thank you is in order to Sarah Pelmas of The Winsor School, who has served as President of AISNE’s Board of Directors and will remain on the board as a Trustee. It is with gratitude that we look back on Sarah’s service as the leader of our association’s governing body. We look forward to this summer when our incoming board members begin their terms: Chuck Carter, PhD, of Beacon Academy Boston, Brian Hargrove of Northfield Mount Hermon, Danielle Heard of Nashoba Brooks School, and Kristy Kerin of Brewster Academy. They will join our board’s incoming Executive Committee—President Lise Charlier of The Cambridge School of Weston (pictured), Vice President Brad Bates of The Dublin School (pictured), Secretary Allison Webster of Dedham Country Day School (pictured), and Treasurer Dr. Tara Gohlmann, of Buckingham Browne & Nichols School—to lead AISNE into its bright future. It’s an exciting time at AISNE as we end the 2023-24 school year and look ahead to what awaits our association of esteemed independent schools!

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Latin students across the United States and the world take the National Latin Exam (NLE). The NLE is an opportunity for students to stretch themselves and receive reinforcement and recognition for their progress with the language. Depending upon their score in relation to the national average, students may earn certificates, medals, and may even qualify for scholarships. This year, all 27 of our Grade 7 students participated in the Introduction to Latin level for the National Latin Exam. The national average this year was 28/40. We are proud of all the students for their hard work and effort and pleased to report that 14 students received certificates, 10 of which also received medals (3 gold and 7 silver).

As a part of their annual curriculum, Grade 8 students at Nashoba Brooks School are tasked with creating a short 5-6 minute documentary on a topic of their choosing for the C-SPAN Student-Cam Documentary contest. This year, out of 1,600 submissions from students across the country spanning Grades 6-12, 150 prizes were awarded in total, of which only 30 went to Middle Schoolers. Nashoba Brooks is proud to have once again received one of these coveted spots, taking Third Place for Addi. K and Chloe B.’s project, “Securing Tomorrow: An Exploration of AI in Cyber Defense.” Now in its 20th year, StudentCam is an annual competition that encourages students to research and engage with issues that affect local and broader communities across the nation. With this year’s competition theme, "Looking Forward while Considering the Past," AI was a popular topic, but Chloe and Addi’s focus on cybersecurity and their dive into both the benefits and worries concerning this new technology set them apart. “We had been looking at AI as having just a negative impact,” Addi notes, “but as we continued interviewing and researching we were able to see the potential it has.” Chloe continues, “It’s a neutral tool and many different people can use it for many different outcomes.” Chloe and Addi’s success was celebrated this morning with a screening of their film, an award celebration, and well-wishes from many individuals including Rep. Simon Cataldo and Sen. Ed Markey. This win secures the tenth consecutive winning placement for a Nashoba Brooks team and a 100% record for every year we have participated. We are always proud to have our Head of School, Danielle Heard, share her words of wisdom with the world!
"The ICGS network connects us across grade levels, school structures, oceans, and continents to leverage our shared wisdom, experience, and imagination." Many, many thanks to ICGS Governing Board President Danielle Heard, Head of Nashoba Brooks School, for sharing her reflections with our Coalition community. Follow the link to read more about how one group of girls' school students is exercising their creativity and ingenuity (and sense of humor!) in making the idea of "connections" real. https://lnkd.in/gJYvmQ8R
