Today, we released an industry-first… peer-reviewed data for automated cell therapy manufacturing in Cytotherapy, a scientific journal. The paper reports that a robotic cell expansion process is equivalent to the manual process. Additionally, estimates based on industry data indicate this technology can reduce the cost of a typical GMP-level cell therapy manufacturing process by as much as 70%, on a per-product basis! This was made possible thanks to collaboration with our incredible proof-of-concept partners including Cytiva, Charles River Laboratories, the University of California, San Francisco and more. Earlier this year, we published peer-reviewed data for automated cell therapy manufacturing in Cytotherapy, the official journal of the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy (ISCT). Here are the top 3 takeaways from our findings: 🔬Our robotic cluster for manufacturing cell therapy products demonstrated comparable cell yields, viability, and identity when compared to manually cultured CD8+ T cells. ⚗ The data also demonstrates how our robotic approach reduces the number of human errors, which are the most significant cause of contamination, and enables the manufacturing of sterile products even in a non-classified environment. 📉 Estimates based on industry data prove this technology can reduce the cost of a typical GMP-level cell therapy manufacturing process by as much as 70%, on a per-product basis. Exciting news from our partners at Wilson Wolf Manufacturing, LLC! With ScaleReady, they just rolled out a $20M G-Rex Grant Program, designed to propel the advancement of cell and gene therapies. The program will reduce the barriers to entry for cell and gene therapy manufacturers and provide resources and services to help implement or optimize a highly efficient G-Rex® based cell manufacturing platform. It is open to all, and relevant for any cell and gene therapy entity that is moving toward, or already conducting, clinical manufacturing. Given our shared goal of scaling cell therapy treatments, it’s awesome to see this come to fruition. It is crucial to develop a simple process - so that it can be readily automated from there. Via our partnership, we are already collaborating to automate their G-Rex® bioreactors, so manufacturers can use the automated bioreactor without substantially changing their existing process. Exciting news! We’ve partnered with Portal to automate cell engineering within cell therapy manufacturing. This partnership will enable us to add automation support for Portal’s platform and overall approach to intracellular delivery. Together, we aim to develop a Robotic Mechanoporation Cartridge that will contain Portal’s hardware consumable kit, enabling our robotic systems to autonomously operate Portal’s mechanoporation technology. This will allow cell therapy manufacturers to uplevel efficiency, throughput and speed, while reducing the risk of human error. This sets us up to address some of the largest barriers that exist in cell therapy today, ensuring future patients can benefit from these life-saving treatments. Today, we announced an $85 million commercial partnership with Retro Biosciences! Our robotic system will enable Retro to manufacture cell therapies at a cost-efficient scale, expediting their transition from process development to clinical trials and commercialization. Retro, supported by a recent investment by Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), is a biotechnology company driven by a mission to extend healthy human lifespan by a decade, targeting the cellular drivers of aging. This partnership underscores the versatility of our robotic system for automating the manufacturing processes for both autologous and allogeneic therapies. As "Joe Betts-LaCroix" CEO of Retro, said, “The accelerating rate of change in cell therapies motivated us to look for a manufacturing platform with flexibility at its core. The modular structure of the Multiply Labs robots will help enable Retro to bring its unique cell therapies to patients." Our CEO Fred (Federico) Parietti recently discussed our innovative approach to automating cell therapy manufacturing with Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News. At Multiply Labs, we intentionally don’t design instruments, consumables, or reagents. Instead, we train our robotic system to operate existing GMP-proven instruments and consumable reagents already used by cell therapy manufacturers today. This approach simplifies adoption since manufacturers can seamlessly integrate our system into their current processes. Currently, cell therapy manufacturing costs are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. When factoring in high research and development expenses, therapy prices can exceed a million dollars. Labor costs contribute to about half of these expenses, which means automating manual tasks can lead to significant cost reductions (up to 70%). We’re excited to announce that we’ve partnered with GenScript to automate the cell isolation and enrichment phase of cell therapy manufacturing! Cell isolation using immunomagnetic beads is a critical industry-standard process in cell therapy manufacturing. However, this task is complex and very time-consuming when done manually. Using our cell therapy robotic cluster and GenScript’s GMP-grade CytoSinct 1000 cell isolation solution, this collaboration will introduce the first fully automated solution for bead-based cell isolation. By incorporating this technology, cell therapy manufacturers can automate this part of the process without making substantial modifications to their original manufacturing processes. Automation in this deeply time-consuming area of the process will drive significant benefits around efficiency and support the scalability of cell therapies.
