“White space is to be regarded as an active element, not a passive background.” The Counter Attack trend from our Type Trends report takes this advice seriously – arguably making white space the primary element of focus. The type in this trend is full of charisma and dynamic energy all formed around the hollow shapes at the heart of each letter. 💗 More type trends here: https://mntype.co/3SMBjc2 #TypeTrends2024 Below: ⭐ Bát Tràng Museum by M — N Associates. ⭐ Loot Coffee by Seachange. ⭐ The Museum of London Docklands by Studio Bergini. ⭐ RATIO by Landscape, Jenny Sharaf. ⭐ Building Diversity by Bounty Hunters & Public Service Agency. ⭐ Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity by Manual. ⭐ Blum Skincare by Lina Aragon and María Alejandra Maya-Fresa. ⭐ Frekl by Electric Brands.

Ask anyone in the creative department, and they’ll admit it: they prefer ideation over logistics or tech. And when deadlines loom, every moment counts. Hulsbosch Creative Director, Mikey Hart, says Monotype Fonts lifted his team's productivity by allowing for just that — they spend less time (and less open tabs) hunting for fonts and benefit from seamless, automatic loading of fonts into their design programs. 🌟 Read the full case study: https://mntype.co/3RdD40C Below: work for Coles Group by Hulsbosch.

Here's something you may not hear about every day: the typography of watches. This week on Creative Characters, Doug Wilson speaks to Lee Yuen-Rapati, a designer who specializes in watch and type design, about the intricacies of designing numerals for watches. 🎧 Tune in here: https://mntype.co/3V865Mr Pictured below, in Lee's words: 1) A 12 numeral meant to appear on a curved baseline. In the background are the "default" 1 and 2 numerals showing where they differ from the digits in 12. 2) This is the Fears Redcliff Edwin Edition, family and friends version. 3) Breguet numerals, an example of a watch-specific numeral style. 4) Fears Archival 1930 Small seconds, a reedition of a Fears watch from 1930. It features revived typography. 5) Example of my daily project of drawing watches (@onehourwatch on Instagram).

Monotype + The Readability Consortium = a partnership for the future of reading. 📖 We are excited to join TRC, a team of engineers, psychophysicists, and designers dedicated to making reading more comfortable. Our collaboration combines our expertise in fonts and design with TRC's research to create accessible reading experiences for people around the world — especially within writing systems which tend to be overlooked in type research despite widespread use, like Arabic and Mandarin Chinese. We're excited to join the existing members of TRC, including Google, Adobe, and the nonprofit Readability Matters! Discover more about our partnership here: https://mntype.co/3KtSz0S
