Not only will this project increase habitat for various wildlife, improve water quality, enhance fisheries, and provide recreational blueway space, but it will also be the first living shoreline to protect a federal levee system. This innovative approach provides a unique solution for integrating natural and engineered defenses to enhance coastal resilience and protection. Happy World Environment Day! Today, let’s raise awareness on sustainable initiatives addressing climate challenges, starting with exciting updates on the Carrot Island Living Shoreline Project. Now under construction, this project contributes to coastal resilience and ecological restoration efforts. The living shoreline features innovative 3-D printed coastal structures designed to diminish wave energy, while simultaneously promoting marsh habitat growth. These structures are needed to efficiently and cost effectively stabilize critically eroding Carrot Island, which plays a crucial role in safeguarding Beaufort, North Carolina, from storm events. Moffatt & Nichol led project design, permitting, and construction support, collaborating closely with Carteret County and the Rachel Carson Reserve. Our team also played a key role in securing grant funding, which covered engineering services and construction costs. The Lightning Point Restoration project is featured in the latest edition of Engineering With Nature: An Atlas, Volume 3.
