At Merlin, we believe there are two main areas where the set of technology loosely called “AI” can benefit the Merlin Pilot that we are building. We see AI as a tool in the toolbox of software design components and we use it only where it’s the best tool for the job. Read our latest blog post to learn more: https://lnkd.in/epHsTNM9

Merlin’s Senior Director of Regulatory Operations John Illson and Senior Policy Analyst Sophie J. have coauthored an article on the benefits of interfacing safety management systems in the latest issue of Flight Plan, a publication by Gallagher. Merlin is developing interfaces that connect the SMS implemented by its design and manufacturing organization with those implemented by the operators of aircraft in which Merlin’s technology is installed. By developing interfaces between all relevant elements of the ICAO SMS framework, Merlin is establishing a scalable approach that can be leveraged by future service providers adopting, operating, maintaining, or training people to use its technologies. Earlier this month, human factors engineers from Merlin had the opportunity to participate in data collection ride-along flights with KC-135 pilots at @MacDill Air Force Base to better understand crew workload priorities. These two ride-along flights enabled Merlin’s engineers to assess the tasks that pilots execute in-flight to determine where advanced automation capabilities would be the most impactful to safety, cost savings, and efficiency. As novel advanced air mobility vehicles deploy and scale, our existing Air Traffic Control (ATC) system must adapt to properly serve the increasing complexity of the national airspace. Although we believe that artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve system safety and operational performance of the National Airspace System, we also believe that a safety framework that balances bleeding-edge machine learning (ML) and traditional software is critical.
