A landslide has taken out part of Highway 22 over Teton Pass, causing a 90-mile detour to get between Wyoming’s Jackson Hole valley and Teton Valley in Idaho while crews fix the road. For navigation maps to be reliable, they need to be updated with major traffic closures like this in a timely fashion. If a driver isn’t aware of a nearly 2-hour rerouting like the one around Teton Pass, it can be a safety or delivery issue and pose a threat to emergency services. Calling all space domain awareness experts: In-space 📸 of Boeing Starliner’s first-ever astronaut mission! Last week NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronauts successfully docked Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). These satellite images show the spacecraft docked with the ISS’s forward port on the station’s Harmony module. This type of imagery collection, known as non-Earth imaging (NEI), is a breakthrough capability that enables Maxar to support critical space domain awareness missions for government and commercial customers. #ICYMI: Josh Winer presented at the OpenStreetMap US State of the Map U.S. conference over the weekend. He spoke about how OSM editors trace features in Maxar imagery, which creates vector data. When that OSM vector data and Maxar imagery are combined, a map is created that makes it safer for people to get outdoors because they have a visual understanding of the terrain and context about the trails. Here’s a quick recap of his speech: 1. Plan and prepare: Using a map based on OSM, like many outdoor apps are, allows users to have increased confidence in trail type and condition, identify specific features and landmarks for navigation and spot potentially risky areas. 2. Enjoy the adventure: These maps enable real-time navigation and tracking via phone, watches and bike computers. 3. Relive the thrills: Some apps let users watch their tracks on a satellite imagery-based map.
