Martha O'Bryan Center would like to give a shout out to #EastNashville #GirlScout Troop 1050, who answered the call for recent donations! Our new students in our Accelerated Residential Community (ARC) program were in need of a couple of twin beds. However, these amazing #GirlScouts actually donated 4 beds, 4 mattresses, 4 bed pillows, 4 bedding sets, nightstands with charging stations and several annual planners. Girl Scout Troop 1050 leader, Melissa, says: “It means a lot to me as leader of this troop to finish this girl scout season strong with a significant act of kindness. These girls raised the money selling Girl Scout cookies!” They wanted to help their community members while also honoring the #GirlScoutPromise: "To serve God and my country, to help people at all times"...and to make the world a better place! Some of Troop 1050 and their moms are pictured here with MOBC’s Senior Director of High School and Post Secondary Initiatives, Morgan Campey. They offer their best wishes and success to the incoming ARC students! Thank you, Adelyn (mom: Amy), Alice (mom: Emily), Cecilia (mom: Kayla), Clara (mom: Melissa B), Cora (mom: Lauren), Finna (mom: Jesse), Nola (mom: Lemesa), Nora (mom: Melissa S), Penelope (mom: Suzanne), Sarah (mom: Elizabeth) and Shilo (mom: Charidy) for going above and beyond with your donations and continued service to your community.

The #MarthaOBryanCenter aftercare program at Isaac Litton Middle School recently held the "Litton-a-thon," where scholars and their families laughed and learned while doing activities together. Parents navigated robots as their children gave directions, families attempted to build stable homes from Play-Doh designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and there was even a potato sack race! We'd like to thank our friends and partners at the Nashville Public Library and #StudioNPL for providing the robots and special programming for this funtastic event, as well as Ms. Issa, our volunteer instructor who created and presented the stable homes exercise. A big thanks also goes to #ShimmyBones for providing everyone with a delicious meal.

Over the course of the school year, our AmeriCorps K-8 Education Specialist and Assistant Site Coordinator at #MarthaOBryanCenter and Explore! Community School, Jey Kendrick, has been helping coordinate the middle school scholars of our after-school program and two high school student volunteers via NAZA's Youth In Action in brainstorming, receiving funding for, and hosting a community service project of their choosing. On Tuesday, they had their project: an event in cooperation with the homeless service center, Room in the Inn, where they created summer supply bags and goodie bags to pass out, introduced themselves, served dinner, and mingled with the clients of the center. The high school students, Anna & Oliver, are volunteers who were interested in community service work and paired together with our after-school program by NAZA's program called Youth In Action. MOBC’s after-school program at #ExploreCommunitySchool is one of many that YIA has funded in the hopes of increasing student voices and interest in bettering the community. Other #MOBC after-school programs have chosen to do projects relating to all sorts of things, like decreasing pollution, helping wildlife, and promoting recycling/sustainability. Our Explore K-8 group happened to be most enthusiastic about serving the homeless population. This experience has really increased the unity, sense of purpose, and level of respect in #MOBC’s Explore middle school group. They worked with and responded to the high school students very well. The shared interest in the project and their being pretty close in age made it much easier for the students to all bond and build meaningful friendships. In fact, our middle school scholars signed a card for each of the high school students, and their messages in the cards reflect this. The goal is to see our after-school program continue to work with Youth In Action and explore volunteer work as the years go on.

We have 4 new students enrolling for summer classes and we need your help! #MarthaOBryanCenter is in need of two twin beds and a couch. Our Accelerated Residential Community (#ARC) program has new students arriving and moving in on June 2nd. By donating, you will be directly helping students further their education by providing them with the basic needs of a place to sleep and sit for them to further their studies. Our ARC program supports students who enroll and attend Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Nashville (#TCAT) and are pursuing careers in high-demand industries such as construction and nursing. Our MOBC ARC program provides housing for up to 8 students. Some of our amazing AmeriCorps partners are shown here helping our ARC students to clean and move. We are hoping the generous donors have a means of delivering the beds and couch by June 2nd to 7 at Seven Mile Creek Apartments 4040 Travis Dr., Nashville, TN. If you can help, please contact Morgan via email at [email protected] for more details.

The #MarthaOBryanCenter Mother's Day Retreat gave moms in our community a chance to escape, relax, de-stress and enjoy the pleasures of each other's company. While their children put together puzzles, played games and were read to by our gracious Amazon volunteer team, moms could get a massage, experience a sound bath, learn breathing techniques, make bath salts and take a class on self care. We'd like to thank all of our staff, volunteers, AmeriCorps team, partners and especially all of our moms for making this program so rewarding for all involved.

We are delighted to announce the launch of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing a critical issue facing millions of families across the nation. Martha O’Bryan Center, with generous financial support from The Kresge Foundation Foundation, is proud to introduce the Beyond the Cliff coalition.   Beyond the Cliff coalition stands as a pioneering national collaborative, bringing together nonprofits, state and local governments, and other stakeholders dedicated to fostering economic prosperity for families, particularly by tackling the pervasive challenge of the benefits cliff—a significant hurdle for families with low incomes, wherein any increase in earnings leads to an abrupt loss in public assistance, often leaving them in a worse financial state than before. We invite you to join us in spreading awareness about this critical issue and the efforts of the Beyond the Cliff Coalition. For further information and media inquiries, please refer to the press release below.
