A new investigative report by our partner Forbidden Stories exposes how Israeli drone strikes have reportedly killed or injured at least 18 journalists in Gaza since 7 October. This is part of the Gaza Project, bringing together 50 journalists from 13 different news organisations to investigate the killing of journalists in Gaza and the alleged threats, targeting arrests made in the West Bank. New evidence points to AI's potential role in targeting decisions that have led to these killings. With insights from former drone operators, military experts, and surviving journalists, the investigation examines the pattern of attacks, the capabilities of drone technology, and its ethical implications: "Precision could mean avoiding civilian lives, or it could mean targeting civilians." — Read the full analysis: https://lnkd.in/ejQ5rYbs — More from the Gaza Project: https://lnkd.in/ey3xPgtU

🔴 How are Israeli drones killing journalists in Gaza? For the #GazaProject, 50 journalists from 13 international newsrooms coordinated by Forbidden Stories investigated the targeting of those who were covering the war. ⬇️ Samer Abu Daqqa, Abdallah Al-Hajj, Ahmed Fatima, Anas Al-Sharif… their names are among those of the 18 reporters we identified as injured or killed by precision strikes launched by drones, since the outbreak of Israel’s war in Gaza following Hamas’ terrorist attack on October 7th. Four of them were wearing press vests and were clearly identifiable as journalists.  👉 https://lnkd.in/ejQ5rYbs The Israeli military is also using several artificial intelligence systems to generate targets. Lavender, an artificial intelligence–based program used to generate a kill list of over 37,000 people, has served as a blueprint for signature drone strikes since October 7, the consortium found. Journalists' presence in war zones is critical. They are our eyes on the ground. They can prevent war crimes from multiplying with impunity, and let the public in on what is happening. "Where there is strong potential for a war crime being committed, the live stream becomes critical evidence” says Irene Kahn, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression and opinion. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTT93szk paper trail media GmbH ARIJ Network Le Monde The Guardian AFP +972 Magazine Radio France DER SPIEGEL DER STANDARD ZDF Tamedia

In our latest interview, we spoke with InternetLab - human rights and internet policy think tank’s Heloisa Massaro on the role of social media and AI in the electoral process, especially in light of Brazil’s upcoming municipal elections in October. In preparation for these elections, the Superior Electoral Court issued a resolution in February regarding the use of AI and the responsibility of platforms during the electoral process. What does this moment mean for Brazilian democracy, especially for underrepresented groups? As AI rapidly advances, concerns about its potential misuse in elections are rising. However, POLITICO Europe's Mark Scott argues that we shouldn't panic just yet. Despite the alarming deepfakes and disinformation enabled by AI, Scott maintains a measured perspective, suggesting that voters' better judgment will likely prevail: 💡 "For now, I have a potentially naive belief that people are smarter than many of us think they are. As easy as it is to think that one well-placed AI deepfake on social media may change the minds of unsuspecting voters, that's not how people make their political choices."
