Supporting children through and beyond a parent's cancer nationwide.

Om oss

Kesem is the leading national nonprofit supporting children facing a parent’s cancer. Founded in 2000, Kesem’s community consists of more than 5,000 volunteer college student leaders at over 130 college chapters across the country, providing year-round programs and services for children ages 6-18 at no cost to families. Its flagship program, Camp Kesem, is a week-long, sleep-away summer camp. Beyond camp, Kesem provides a continuum of touchpoints for campers and their families. After losing her mother to cancer, Heather and her father, Scott Jensen, embarked on a cross-country journey from Massachusetts to California, seeking a fresh start and a new home. As a single dad, Scott prioritized keeping his daughter safe, healthy, and happy as she navigated her new "normal." He shares, "I did everything I could to support her in our new environment—volunteered at school, held game nights for her friends, and got involved with the school district." Despite the positive things happening as they established their new home and community in California, Heather still faced challenges in finding those who truly understood what life was like without her mom. It was during this time that Scott and Heather learned about Kesem. For the first time since her mother’s passing, she felt understood and accepted within a community uniquely made for her. And at Kesem, Heather became known as "Sunshine." "Surrounded by peers and counselors who had similar experiences, Heather's confidence and resilience blossomed," said Scott. "The impact of Kesem extended far beyond the week at camp, providing her with a supportive network and lifelong friends." You can help us reach more children like Heather from coast to coast. You can help us create a world where every child navigating a parent's cancer can find hope and rediscover the joys of their youth through and beyond a parent's cancer. Kesem’s support for children grows, adapts, and endures - at diagnosis, during treatment, in remission, after a recurrence, and beyond - showing children that they don’t have to go through these experiences alone, no matter who they are and no matter what happens. 💚 We know that this type of peer-to-peer support can be powerful and transformative for children, not only in how they cope with a parent’s cancer but also in how they view themselves and navigate the world, as parents and children consistently report more positive mental health outcomes after Kesem. You can help us create more life-changing experiences for children facing a parent's cancer, at absolutely no cost to families served. After his Mom was diagnosed with cancer when he was seven, Satchi “Shaka” Metaxas felt his “childhood draw to a premature close, overshadowed by cancer. The disease, constant doctor visits, and fight for [his] Mom’s life superseded [his] own needs.” That’s where Kesem comes into the story. After a cross-country move and some initial resistance, Shaka went on to attend #CampKesem. And he went back the next summer, and the next, and the next—ultimately finding his own “sanctuary,” and a place where he could just be a kid again. As Shaka shares, “the magic of Kesem transcended age,” and evolved with him at every step in his journey. Now 21, he is committed to paying his experiences forward as a counselor and coordinator at Kesem at UCLA—carrying that same sense of belonging, understanding, and community with him. “My Kesem family has grown with me and supported me for nearly two-thirds of my life now—through the hardest moments I’ve been through, through the joys, through everything. It brings me immense joy to know that I get to make an impact on kids who are in the same position I was thirteen years ago…” You can help us create more stories like Shaka’s. You can help us reach more families that need us, and ensure that Kesem’s support for children persists and endures through and beyond a parent's cancer. No child should have to face a parent's cancer alone. 💚 Donate today, and change a child’s life at https://lnkd.in/gVt3J7Ex#KesemThroughAndBeyond
