Black women are exhausted. But they're beginning to do something about it. Instead of staying on the treadmill of ever-increasing busyness - which inevitably leads to burnout - many of them are taking sabbaticals to help restore their bodies and spirits. In her latest piece for Sweet July, "How Sabbaticals Are Revolutionizing Self-Care," Stephanie 'Stevie' Taylor explains why Black women are so tired, and sheds light on how they are pushing back by prioritizing self care. This is our whole reason for being. We choose to be part of the solution. We encourage a return to rest. A return to stillness. A return to self. A return to ease, self-love, and soft living. Our founder Lisa Hurley, who was interviewed for the piece, thinks of The Great Exhale as a self-care sorority for Black women. It's a space where Black women can safely relax, remove their superwoman cape, and take a breath. While we provide continuous virtual self-care support, there is also a need for in-person retreats such as Gym Hooky, A Weekend For Me, and more. We are honored and grateful to be highlighted along with these amazing organizations, and to be amplified in the company of Ariel Belgrave Harris, Empress Varnado, and Sherita Gaskins-Tillett MD FACOG. Black women need rest. The microaggressions Black women uniquely face can cost them their livelihoods and even their lives. Research proves it. - The number of Black women and girls committing suicide has skyrocketed in 20 years. - More than 88% of Black women have experienced burnout. - About two-thirds of Black women feel emotionally unsafe at work. - Black women are also more likely to deal with chronic stress and stress-related health issues. Check out my latest Sweet July article about the growing number of Black women taking extended hiatuses or sabbaticals from work. Thank you to Empress Varnado , Lisa Hurley , Sherita Gaskins-Tillett MD FACOG , and Ariel Belgrave Harris for sharing their stories and the important work they do in this space.
