Like any new technology, AI comes with inherent risks. But for me, one risk outweighs them all: the risk of missing out. It was great to be in Brussels this morning to speak to the IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals AI Global Governance conference about exactly this subject. As I said to the group, AI brings inherent risks and governance challenges - but it’s also the opportunity of the century. At the start of all previous technologies, it’s been hard to predict how they would change the world and what benefits they would have. When I first tried the internet in a computer lab in 1987, I could only email someone in the same room as me - and it was faster to just talk to them. In 1997, the web was just a series of links - and in 2007, the best entertainment our mobile phones could bring us was the game of Snake. And still, working together with Government, industry, experts and communities to pursue opportunities boldly and optimistically, we made a success of them. Today 73% of the world own a mobile phone and 66% have internet access - and, working together, we’ve established standards for security, privacy and safety. And we’ll do that again. Generative AI could increase the size of the EU Economy by €1.2 trillion - and bring extraordinary and everyday positive change to people across the globe. But these benefits are not automatic. Technology providers need to work with experts, governments and communities to understand the technology, opportunities and risks - and to coordinate internationally and adapt to major developments. There are three critical pillars on which we build: secure by default; private by design, and safe by partnership. And our new Generative AI and Privacy Paper, released today, discusses how Generative AI products can be built with these pillars in mind - with policy recommendations on how best to do that. "To understand the potential and risks artificial intelligence poses to the future of society, considerations of the lessons from the technological past are required. The decided notes of caution and optimism were clear from opening keynote speakers at the IAPP AI Governance Global 2024 in Brussels, Belgium." Joe Jones opens day two at #AIGG24, expressing gratitude for the profession we are building together in AI governance. Up next, MEP Dragos Tudorache reflects on the EU AI Act as a line in the sand, a frame in which innovators can develop trustworthy AI. Matt Brittin, Google EMEA President, says, “we can’t begin to imagine the applications that are going to change the world” … but we need to focus on risks and responsibilities, including the risk of missing the moment. Alexandra Reeve Givens, CDT CEO, sits down with Nick Clegg, Meta President, challenging him to address the risks of downstream uses of powerful open source models and asking should you really be assessing these alone - what is the role of government? Nick focuses on the importance of open source tools Meta is releasing for developers to kickstart governance. If you open source, thoughtfully, responsibly and safely, he says, you get the benefits of all stakeholder input and democratized access to these important technologies. #AIGP
