The latest example of how Heirloom® puts the client in complete control of their IBM #Mainframe modernization journey comes from one of the world's largest auto-manufacturing companies in Germany, which needed to upgrade their existing production infrastructure on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. Partnering with Accenture, we seamlessly transitioned their production system from AWS Fargate to AWS EKS, running the open-source Payara Java application server, which is ideally suited for complex enterprise workloads. This was a very nice surprise! A customer-written article from Aleksi Anttila at Arek Oy about their experiences using Heirloom® to migrate a very large IBM #Mainframe workload as a high-performance scalable Java application on the cloud. There are so many valuable insights & positive statements about this project in the article, but there are a couple of key aspects that I believe ensured a successful outcome: (1) Heirloom's unique software platform put Arek in direct & complete control of their modernization journey. (2) Executive sponsorship (Satu Koskinen) and world-class execution from an aligned project delivery team (Arek Oy, Accenture Nordics, Tietoevry, Google Cloud, Azul & Heirloom Computing). Here are my top 5 highlights from the article: (1) "There was a total of a whopping 22 million lines of COBOL code to convert. That's a compelling number. The first step was to make sure that we have the technology with which the reform can be implemented." (2) "Compared to [the mainframe] before, the performance is now four to eight times larger for processing events without the end user seeing any problems." (3) "The system has been in production use for a year and a half, and it has already reached a stable stage. No problems have occurred." (4) "This is really an exceptionally large and very successful project, completely unique on the scale of Finland. Not many of them have been seen in other parts of the world either." (5) "The project showed how nicely technologies from different eras can work and talk to each other. It's amazing how much can be accomplished. At the same time, we have learned from the processes to understand the opportunities offered by cloud environments."
