While Habitat for Humanity welcomes the mention of “the transformative power of cities worldwide as drivers for sustainable development”, the G7 Leaders’ Summit communique overlooks the pervasive global housing crisis and rapid urbanization driving the expansion of informal settlements. As such, the G7 misses a significant opportunity to achieve its further ambitions for sustainable development and industrial growth in Africa and beyond. We are urging G7 leaders to recognize that improving the homes of the most vulnerable is essential for human development, and a critical gap in their Official Development Assistance. Read our full response to the G7 communique that includes insight from our COO Patrick Canagasingham and recommedations for future commitments. https://lnkd.in/eW7BXiDU #HomeEquals #G7Italy

Through shelter, we empower.
About us
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

Earlier this week we released a new issue brief, Slum Blind: The overlooked links between climate migration and informal settlements, as part of our #HomeEquals advocacy campaign. The issue brief outlines that there is a growing blind spot in the form of climate-induced migration within developing countries toward urban informal settlements, which are already vulnerable. It reveals, among other things, that: ➡️ Although public discourse centers on refugees crossing borders into higher-income countries, most migration does not cross international borders ➡️ More than 215 million people could be impacted by climate migration by 2050, with the lowest income and most rapidly urbanizing countries the most affected ➡️ By 2050, 2 out of every three people in the world are expected to live in cities And the bulk of this growth is predicted to occur in Asia and Africa where 80% of the world’s informal settlements are located As the G7 Summit begins today in Apulia, Italy, Habitat for Humanity is urging G7 members to prioritize informal settlement upgrading as an opportunity to address human mobility while increasing climate resilience. Investing in informal settlements and advancing policy changes can contribute to building climate-resilient cities. https://lnkd.in/e7CXjt7R

I’m pleased to share that my op-ed has been featured on Devex, urging the G7 to prioritize upgrading informal settlements. This is crucial due to the growing link between climate change migration and informal settlements, highlighted in a new Habitat for Humanity International issue brief - https://lnkd.in/gPgUP4AQ Our brief reveals a massive blind spot: climate-induced migration within developing countries toward vulnerable urban informal settlements. The focus is often on migration to the global north, but the real issue lies within and between countries in the global south. It’s time for the G7 to act. This op-ed and issue brief are part of our #homeequals campaign, advocating for policy changes to increase access to adequate housing in informal settlements. Please read the op-ed to learn more and join the conversation on driving meaningful change. 🌍🏘️ #ClimateChange #Migration #InformalSettlements #G7 #HabitatForHumanity #Devex #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/g6PgF_j2

Quality, accessible and affordable housing makes for healthy residents, but not everyone has equal access. Because of structural racism, people of color have faced barriers to both quality health care and housing for generations. This collection of research compiled by Urban Institute demonstrates how decent, affordable housing can lead to better health outcomes among people of color. https://lnkd.in/ef-HKMd
