Yesterday, Graham staff joined parent activists and community leaders in Albany for Family Advocacy Day. We spoke with elected officials about systemic racism and other harms in the child welfare system, while advocating for policies that keep families together. We love a big win! Coach James Nightengale of Graham Windham has been keeping The Center updated on the tedious process of getting all of the necessary paperwork in for an official court-ordered name change for his youth, Dayanara, so that her ID documents can properly reflect her chosen name. In the most recent update, James shared the great news that Dayanara (Daya) was approved for an NYC ID and for a birth certificate correction, major steps allowing her to apply for college, jobs, and housing! A “big win” that “has only added fuel to the fire of Daya’s ambition to get things done,” says James.
