Earlier this month, Gilchrist held its 9th Annual Steps of Hope: A Tribute Walk at Cromwell Valley Park. Over 500 attendees honored their loved ones, creating a touching and uplifting atmosphere. Participants received memory badges with photographs of their loved ones, enjoyed performances by our music therapists, and listened to heartfelt reflections and readings. Many families wore matching T-shirts with their loved ones’ pictures, showing the enduring bonds through loss. Read more about this beautiful event on our blog: https://lnkd.in/gMwNy2zw

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the news of emancipation finally reached Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. At Gilchrist, we honor the African American community's resilience, strength, and enduring spirit. Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our past, celebrate progress, and commit to the ongoing fight for justice and equality. Earlier this week, GBMC and Gilchrist celebrated Juneteenth. The GBMC Black Alliance Employee Resource Group hosted a special Juneteenth Jubilee! It was a celebration full of education and history, live music, culture, art, and food. Juneteenth is not only a day of celebration of freedom, but also one of opportunity, equity and access. It is an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible – and there is still so much work to do.

Over the weekend, the Greater Pride Employee Resource Group (ERG) led GBMC and Gilchrist at the Baltimore Pride Parade. It was a fun and uplifting experience and a fantastic opportunity to build community within the GBMC and Gilchrist family and show our support for the LGBTQIA+ community we serve. We were also grateful to have so many people stop by our booth during Pride in the Park to thank us for taking care of their loved ones. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Columbia Patuxent for their recent generous grant to help to refresh the Family Room at our Howard County Hospice Center. The room is a place where family members can gather, rest and recharge during their loved one’s final weeks at Gilchrist. We recently delivered a huggable bear to Margaret “Margie” Guarneri-Bloomfield in memory of her husband, Barry, who was on services with us. Barry played the drums, loved music, was an avid hiker, and enjoyed kayaking. He adored wolves, even naming a wolf statue "Georgie," and had a penchant for dressing up in suits. Barry worked in the medical field and was known for his outgoing personality and willingness to help others. Our team lovingly crafted a bear with a tie made from materials shared by Margie, capturing the essence of Barry and his many interests. We hope this bear brings comfort and joy to Margie. We have a high need for volunteer sewers to help us create more memory bears for our families.
