Collaboration is key to the GE Vernova's mission to #electrify and #decarbonize the world so I am proud that the GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy team hosted integrated project team partners Ontario Power Generation, Aecon Group Inc. and AtkinsRéalis this week in support of the Darlington New Nuclear Project. OPG President & CEO Ken Hartwick met with the BWRX-300 team, participated in a virtual reality walk-through of our #SMR technology and toured our fuel manufacturing operation. I value Ken’s leadership and partnership and look forward to building on recent project milestones as the project team members work together to deploy North America’s first fleet of SMRs ensuring a safe, reliable and clean energy source that will benefit Ontario for generations to come. GEH UK Country Director Andy Champ and Senior VP, Advanced Nuclear Market Development Patrick Looney were delighted to attend a small modular reactor roundtable hosted by Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie today. SMRs will be a vital part of delivering the UK's ambitions which is why we have entered the Great British Nuclear competition. Following progress in Canada, the BWRX-300 is the nearest to market in the competition, making it the lowest risk, highest reward option. The event came following the welcome news the UK's future nuclear plans continue to progress, with Wylfa recently announced as the latest site for a new large nuclear power station. The community was excited by the news, appreciative of Virginia Crosbie’s support of nuclear energy, and very engaged in the discussion with us.

Lisa McBride, MA (Lead), Country Leader for GEH SMR Canada, attended the Women in Nuclear UK 2024 Conference in Manchester this week. GEH was proud to be a sponsor of the event and play a part in inspiring and encouraging a new generation of women in the nuclear industry. More than 400 delegates from the industry participated in the conference as the UK targets 24 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050, including a fleet of small modular reactors. “There were great discussions about female leadership and the fantastic work happening in our sector as the UK looks to increase its nuclear energy capacity,” Lisa said.

High burnup fuel rods manufactured by GE Vernova’s Nuclear Fuel business have been delivered to the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory for examination after three cycles of commercial operation. Evaluation of these rods will provide us valuable information about high burnup fuel which enables fuel to remain in the reactor core for longer periods of time. We’re proud to be part of this collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Read more: https://lnkd.in/eXQ4tcfx

We are pleased to confirm Andy Champ’s appointment as Country Director. This appointment is further evidence of our commitment to the UK nuclear market. We stand ready to provide a share of the Government’s 2050 target of 24GW of nuclear capacity, with the capability to deploy a fleet of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) alongside a robust supply chain. This news follows our SMR supply chain conference hosted in Sheffield in March, and confirmation of a £33.6 million Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF) grant from the Government in January which will support the development of our SMR technology in the UK.
I am delighted to announce that I have joined the GE Hitachi team as Country Director to spear head the UK Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programme. In this position, I will be responsible for leading the collaboration with customers, stakeholders, and suppliers to deploy our BWRX-300 SMR technology in the UK and lead our ongoing application to the Great British Nuclear SMR competition which is part of the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero plan to deliver 24GW of new nuclear capacity by 2050. Following our recent SMR supply chain conference hosted in Sheffield with over 150 UK-based businesses, this appointment is further evidence of our commitment to the UK market. GE has a long and deep history in the UK, with a presence dating back 130 years. GE Vernova employs more than 3,200 people at 11 sites across the country and its equipment is used to generate 35 percent of the UK’s electricity. I have worked across the energy supply chain for more than 30 years, delivering nuclear, wind and gas power projects across the world, as well as advising on the establishment of the Regulated Asset Base (RAB) financing model for future nuclear deployment in the UK. “Working with partners to deliver nationally significant energy projects is what motivates me. GE Hitachi has a market-leading SMR solution, with a contract in place to construct the first BWRX-300 in Canada. I want to make sure the UK follows closely behind, so all our focus is on responding to Great British Nuclear’s invitation to tender by the June deadline
