The United States and Canada touted the highest regional percentage of engaged employees in 2023, at 33%. However, the employee experience is still lacking in other areas — the U.S. and Canada region also has the second-highest percentage of employees experiencing stress a lot of the previous day. In 2023, positive emotions fully rebounded to their pre-pandemic levels. Over seven in 10 people worldwide reported experiencing a lot of enjoyment (73%), smiling or laughing a lot (73%), or feeling well-rested (71%) the previous day. The world also saw the first decline in global negative experiences since 2014. Gallup's 2024 Global Emotions report provides a measure of life’s intangibles — feelings and emotions — that traditional economic indicators such as GDP were never intended to capture. These data provide a real-time snapshot of people’s daily experiences, offering leaders insights into the health of their societies that they cannot gather from economic measures alone. More than half of employees worldwide say it is a good time to find a job, up slightly from 2022 and varying considerably across countries. Gallup has found lower levels of active disengagement in countries where respondents report it is a good time to find a job. Improving economic conditions may shift workers from anger to indifference -- from actively disengaged to not engaged -- but not from indifference to inspiration. Actively disengaged employees in a tough economy, with fewer choices, may be trapped in jobs they don’t like. Job opportunities allow bitter workers to leave bad situations and find better ones. In 2023, overall employee wellbeing declined. This drop was most pronounced among workers younger than 35, moving from 35% in 2022 to 31% in 2023. So, what can leaders do to improve the health and productivity of the world’s workforce? Start with listening to employees. In this year’s State of the Global Workplace report, we examine the current state of employee mental health and wellbeing at the global level. As part of this report, we conducted follow-up interviews with respondents from around the world to learn more about their feelings regarding their work. Get an inside look at what employees around the globe are thinking and feeling in our State of the Global Workplace: 2024 Report. https://lnkd.in/gpBkX9Ha

In 2023, only three in 10 managers globally are engaged -- feel involved and enthusiastic -- in their jobs. New demands for worker flexibility in the remote and hybrid workplace and increased risk of employee mental health problems add to the already difficult job of managing. Managers are uniquely positioned to know each employee’s specific needs, career goals and work-life situation. Gallup’s meta-analysis of more than 200,000 manager-led teams found that more highly engaged managers have more engaged teams. If a company wants to increase workforce engagement, it should prioritize making managers’ jobs as streamlined, engaging and fulfilling as possible. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/g99dMjun

Half of employees who are engaged at work are thriving in life. Not all mental health issues are related to work, but work is a factor in life evaluations and daily emotions. Employees who dislike their jobs tend to have high levels of daily stress as well as elevated levels of all other negative emotions. In contrast, when employees find their work and work relationships meaningful, employment is associated with high levels of daily enjoyment and low levels of all negative daily emotions. Addressing employee mental health requires offering support so they can thrive in life and be engaged at work. Leaders and managers are 56% more likely to experience extensive disruptive change in their organization than individual contributors. While difficulties often affect frontline workers, in the current business landscape, it’s leaders and managers who are experiencing the most change. Organizations are not just changing; jobs within organizations are transforming too. Over half of managers state their organization has restructured teams, while nearly half say they’ve had to make budget cuts. This means more work with tighter budgets and new teams working in different ways. Learn more about the effects of disruptive organizational change: https://lnkd.in/gZE2FqNi

Globally, one in five employees report experiencing daily loneliness. Age and work location play a big role. Employees under 35 report higher levels of loneliness than those over 35. Fully remote employees report significantly higher levels of loneliness (25%) than those who work fully on-site (16%). However, there are some upsides. Work itself decreases loneliness. In general, working adults are less lonely (20%) than those who are unemployed (32%), and this remains true across age groups. There's a disconnect with 97% managers believing they're doing a really good job managing their people, while 69% of employees experience bad managers, so somebody's not telling the truth, obviously. The impact on the German economy is profound, our conservative efforts put that above a hundred billion." -- Gallup Regional Managing Partner, Pa M. K.
