Fred Hutch is well represented today at Yale Medicine for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Annual Lung Cancer SPORE workshop. We are here celebrating the 20th anniversary of the discovery of EGFR mutations in #lungcancer and how this has transformed diagnosis and treatment of the disease. I was involved in the discovery of EGFR mutations 20 years ago, and I'm proud to be back plotting the course of research to come.

Now in its fifteenth year, the Comprehensive Hematology & Oncology Review Course founded by Fred Hutch's Dr. Andrew Coveler is still going strong. Each year, it attracts more than 100 people in-person and more online to learn about guidelines, recommendations and recent advances regarding therapeutic options for patients with solid tumor cancers and malignant and nonmalignant hematologic disorders. Fred Hutch researchers have developed a foam delivery system for gene therapy that they hope could help make future therapies cheaper and more accessible. https://bit.ly/3Vtus8R

Virologists at Fred Hutch are another step closer to finding a cure for herpes through gene therapy after pre-clinical models showed it reduced up to 90 percent of the viral infection in tests. "We're working on trying to develop new, gene therapy-based cures. Not just to treat these viruses but actually to cure them," said Dr. Keith Jerome, a professor in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division at Fred Hutch and one of the researchers of the study. Congrats to Fred Hutch research fellows Drs. Emily Liang, Steve Blinka and Natasha Kwendakwema on winning Young Investigator Awards this year from Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation ! They were honored at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago last week. Liang, Blinka and Kwendakwema represent the wide range of research supported by the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at Fred Hutch and the University of Washington.
