  • It's been a few months since the Total Solar Eclipse and the first project our Sony Burano captured! We're excited to spotlight the short film from Director Jesse Rudoy and DP Ezra Bassin-Hill. The team journeyed to Rochester, NY to document the community events surrounding the cultural phenomenon. While the short film is in post-production, we had the chance to catch up with the team about their experience in Rochester and working with the new Sony Burano. Check out our blog post for the Q&A with Jesse and Ezra: https://lnkd.in/encGhbdq

After nearly a year of planning, our team produced this promotional Audi spot to increase the visibility and accessibility of larger virtual production opportunities in our region. Like any filmmaking tool, Virtual Production is a wonderful resource to have in the arsenal, and we wanted to create a comprehensive product to showcase not just our end result capabilities but also to showcase and teach the process of the technology to our clients and community. So we partnered with The Pine Box Studios, Vp Toolkit, Catalyst Virtual, and Expressway Cinema Rentals to create a cinematic spot, accompanied by an all-encompassing in-depth behind-the-scenes look into the project’s creation. This project originated with our Director Nic Reader developing the concept, shots, and storyboards while EP Mike Gualtieri and Producer/PM Joe Leonard started putting the pieces together to make it a possibility. Our longtime pal and collaborator Brian Market from the Pine Box Studios opened the doors and gave us carte blanche to all of their magical resources. The Pine Box’s Ryan Ward led the charge from the logistical and rigging approach for all lighting and the LED wall essentials. Format then teamed up with Ian Fursa and VP Toolkit to create the 3D environments in Unreal Engine as the immense LED wall construction began. With a 35’ wide backdrop, a 30’ horizontal LED wall for top reflections, and two 13’ high LED wild walls, we could bring the spot to life and surround the talent and hero vehicle with ease. We shot using an Alexa 35 - which has an internal genlock option so we could seamlessly sync with the virtual wall. We decided to shoot this project with Cooke anamorphic lenses to enhance the cinematic quality while enhancing the luxury style and feel of the spot. Our new friends at Winner Auto in Wilmington, DE generously donated a brand new Audi e-tron to the project and have been a valuable partner throughout production and post-production. With production wrapped, Format’s Post Supervisor Andrew Kunkle took the wheel in post-production as we brought the spot to life. Format’s Daniel Haddaway and Mark Melchiorre created CGI shots that were added throughout to augment the in-camera footage. Our longtime pal Ben Wong from Dragon Fly Audio Post and Rob Bessette from Color Refinery added the final touches to the sound and color respectively to bring the spot across the finish line. Every live-action scene in the entire spot was generated in Unreal Engine and captured in-studio over the course of just one single production day. Virtual production is a great tool that allows us to transport to multiple complex environments quickly and seamlessly. With this tool, we were able to bypass any company moves, process trailers, weather conditions, and multi-day/night filming. Check out the final results below and an in-depth behind-the-scenes look linked in the comments!

The Audi virtual production spot that recently debuted gave new meaning to the term Unreal. Using Unreal Engine, Vp Toolkit and Catalyst were able to create incredibly realistic environments on our studio’s LED Walls while our friends at Format handled the film production using gear from our studio partners Expressway Cinema Rentals. It’s #Unreal when so many talented people come together in order to create something magical in our space. #SpotlightSunday #virtualproduction #thinkINsiDEthebox

  • ✋ 5 Benefits to Building a Relationship with a Rental House 1️⃣ Scalability Working with the right rental house in the film industry gives you the opportunity to work at a level that adheres to your current production budget, while giving you the chance to grow into larger scale productions in the future. "Expressway has plenty of clients that have rented with us when they were just starting off their production company, maybe getting a few lenses and lights here and there. Those same clients have stayed with us and used us as a force multiplier to grow into national scale television commercials or major streaming projects." 2️⃣ Technical Expertise Rental houses are staffed with industry professionals that have hands-on experience in their respective camera, grip, or lighting departments. "When Expressway started, we decided it was important to develop our departments from the beginning to be able to operate as experts within their respective fields rather than Jacks-of-All-Trades. This allowed each of our departments to invest resources and focus their team's time into their areas of nuanced technical expertise." 3️⃣ Industry Knowledge Rental Houses are the place to go to talk shop, get insight on the latest industry news and trends, and learn from technical professionals. "Book Smart vs. Street Smart is something we always strive to strike a balance of. The technical information is important so that we know what our equipment is capable of and what the right tool for the right job would be. However, each Expressway staff member is constantly speaking with clients, technicians, and industry contacts to gain insight from on-the-ground feedback." 4️⃣ Equipment Options There is a warehouse full of opportunity at your fingertips with equipment curated for different budgets, capability needs, and industry standards. "The Expressway team spends a lot of time looking into different equipment options for our clients. We work with student films, all the way up to major network productions, and want to ensure our equipment options and capabilities are considering both. We invest into the time and ability to send our leadership teams to attend trade shows and host public manufacturer demos so that our staff and clients are able to get insight into what's out now and what's coming down the pipeline." 5️⃣ Community Rental Houses strengthen the local creative community, often hosting social events to get the industry together. "One of the backbones of Expressway's core values is community. We are a people-centric company and our investment into culture and community is what differentiates us from the others. It's important that our teams and our constituents feel like they're a part of something bigger and working towards something even bigger. We want people to feel proud they are a part of Expressway, whether they are employees, clients, or crew."
