Scalds, caused by hot liquid or steam, are one of the most common causes of injury in restaurants. How can you and your team stay safe? Here are our top tips for reducing the risk: ⚠️ When manually transferring hot liquids, keep containers no more than half full, and use a splash guard. ⚠️ When using a rolling cart to transfer hot liquids, always check the container is secure on the cart and won’t fall or tip. ⚠️ Use extreme care when handling foods or liquids that have been microwaved, as they can reach temperatures greater than boiling without bubbling. ⚠️ Keep floors clear of liquids and debris. Slips, trips and falls are responsible for many restaurant scald burns. ⚠️ When appropriate, use hot pads, potholders or proper gloves/mittens. ⚠️ Always wear protective shoes with slip-resistant soles–never open-toed shoes, sandals or boots. ⚠️ Follow all safety procedures when working with deep fryers. While the vast majority of workers’ comp claims are legitimate, it's wise to be on guard for false claims. Here are the red flags every policyholder should look out for: • An injury with no witnesses or the information provided on how the injury occurred doesn’t make sense. • The reported accident occurs immediately before or after job termination, layoff, the end of a big project, or the conclusion of seasonal work. • The injured worker refuses or avoids a diagnostic procedure to confirm the nature or extent of an injury. • The accident or medical report conflicts with the employee’s description of the incident. • Claimant and other workers from the same employer using the same attorney, doctor, or chiropractor. • Familiarity with claims-handling procedures or workers' comp rules, potentially indicating previous claims. • Injuries are subjective, involving soft-tissue injuries, unexplained pain, and complaints that have no medically supported objective findings.  Red Flag indicators in and of themselves do not confirm a claim is fraudulent.
