After suffering a traumatic brain injury during his deployment in Afghanistan, Davon Goodwin returned to North Carolina interested in food access, and in 2019, purchased a 42-acre farm. Off the Land Farms cultivates muscadine grapes and other produce using sustainable practices—but Davon has an even bigger vision. As an Emerson Collective Fellow, he will transform the farm into a community hub, hosting Front Porch Conversations and special Farm Dinners where neighbors can come together to connect on critical community topics. In a county where over 52% of the population lives in poverty and chronic diseases like diabetes are more prevalent than in surrounding counties, access to fresh food is unequal. Off the Land Farms aims to serve the community in new and profound ways.

Inspiration and innovation need — space — to spark world-changing collaborative efforts. In this week’s series on building a consequential company, we look to Stephanie Blake. She’s the CEO of Skylight, an organization that specializes in creating bespoke venues in storied places. Next time you’re thinking about space and events for your business, consider these three things: 1. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 you come together matters. 2. Context matters, so choose your venue and design the space with intention. 3. Draw analogous inspiration from the world’s most innovative companies.

Being a mother at a young age, while also supporting her family, was overwhelming for Solange Manirumva. Manirumva, like many young women in rural villages, faced the responsibilities of adulthood much earlier than planned. She became her family’s primary earner in her teens. When she unexpectedly got pregnant with twins, she found Inshuti Mu Buzima (IMB), as Partners In Health is known in Rwanda, along this path. IMB supports the Rwandan Ministry of Health in making pregnancy, labor, and birth safer for mothers and newborns by training healthcare providers, building infrastructure, and strengthening health systems. EC is proud to be in partnership with Partners In Health’s maternal work in Rwanda and we hope you’ll click the link to learn more about their work: https://bit.ly/3Vmx0W0
