How to save money and emissions with a flexible electricity load ♻️💰 While renewable energy sources have a very low operating cost, that doesn’t mean electricity price and electricity emissions are perfectly correlated. We had a closer look at the data. Across the European grid, when optimizing the overnight charge of an electric vehicle based on price, emissions would increase compared to the baseline for 75 days of the year. So a price-optimization of flexible electricity loads is not automatically saving emissions. The key takeaways of our deep dive: 📈 The correlation between the market electricity prices and carbon emissions is not perfect and varies across years and grids in Europe. 💰 When optimizing electricity usage, relying solely on price signals can lead to higher emissions. ⚖️ Co-optimizing electricity consumption on price and emissions is the best way to unlock cost and carbon savings offered by flexible electricity use. 📊 Having access to granular carbon emissions data is key for a successful combined optimization strategy. Read the full blog post to learn more about how to best optimize electricity loads for emissions and price savings: https://lnkd.in/dGDmPVZG #electricity #renewableenergy #optimization #electricitymarket

⚡We innovated our marginal signal! Learn how we developed a more verifiable and accurate model making us ready to supply high-resolution marginal data. Marginal signals aim to assess the immediate impact of a consumption change on the electricity grid, but estimating marginal emissions accurately is difficult for several reasons. ⚖️ Most marginal algorithms disregard imports and exports and only look at locally generated electricity. However, this can lead to enormous errors in calculating emissions. For example, in 2023, German power plants contributed to 70% of marginal electricity in West Denmark. Moreover, only if models are explainable, can we identify inaccuracies and improve their ability to capture real-world power flows. Resulting from years of research, our team addressed the current challenges by developing a new methodology that adapts flow tracing to estimate the marginal grid mix and calculate marginal emissions. The results? 🤝 More reliable marginal emissions data 💬 A more explainable model, giving transparency into the model’s predictions and increasing trust 🔎 A scalable model ready to calculate marginal emissions at a higher grid granularity Curious about how we developed our new model? We share the most valuable insights in the carousel below and invite you to dive deeper into our latest advancements in the new blog post linked in the comments. 🔦 #marginalemissions  #flowtracing #renewableenergy #energytransition

🔍 Data insights: Battery Power Record in California At the beginning of May, power supplied by batteries on the California grid broke new records reaching over 7GW. Let’s look at the data to see the recent trend and how it helps grid balancing. 📈⚡ The electricity provided by batteries on the California grid has been constantly increasing since 2020 with another major increase at the beginning of 2024. Since the beginning of the year, batteries supplied an average of 17.7 GWh of electricity on the California grid every day representing more than 3% of total demand. Power delivered by batteries usually peaks at more than 4 GW around sunset (8 pm) when solar generation suddenly drops. A new record was set on 7th May 2024 with 7 GW of power supplied by batteries at 8 pm local time. With solar generation dropping by 98% from 11.5 GW to almost 0 in under three hours, batteries smoothened the drop and reduced grid pressure.🔋 The so-called “duck curve” shows the stress on the California grid with increasing solar generation. The net load describes the difference between total electricity demand and the amount met by wind and solar generation, showing the gap that needs to be filled by other generation means (mainly hydro, gas, nuclear, and geothermal). On 7th May 2024, the net load increased by 13.4 GW between 5 and 7 pm, representing half of the peak power demand of the day. With the contribution of batteries, the net load was reduced by 42% (7.7 GW increase), buffering the sudden need for electricity production from other sources such as gas. 💡 What happened this month in California is a great example of how batteries help balance the grid in areas with high reliance on solar energy, helping to progress toward decarbonization. 🚀 Electricity Maps raised €5M to accelerate the data-driven decarbonization of electricity. With climate funds Transition and Revent leading the investment round, we're excited to have partners who share our commitment to solve the climate crisis and recognize the transformative potential of Electricity Maps’ data platform. 🌎 Why now? The year 2023 was the warmest year since global records began in 1850, being 1.2°C above the 20th century average. Transitioning away from fossil fuels creates a pressing and tremendous challenge: How do we balance an increasing electricity demand with an intermittent supply of renewable energy? ⚡ Why us? Electricity Maps centralizes, standardizes and forecasts global electricity data in real-time. While mainly bootstrapped and growing organically since 2016, we have achieved remarkable success: We doubled our revenue annually, expanded our user base to millions of yearly visitors, and served nearly 10 million daily requests through our commercial API. 📈 What’s next? The funding will enable us to accelerate delivering on our mission, where we will map the world’s electricity grids in even more detail, extending our app and API to include many more relevant signals. We will require the brightest minds to join our growing team! Want to join us? Renewable records for Germany 🇩🇪 🔍 Data Insights - At 1pm on May 2nd, Germany generated a near-record amount of electricity from solar power, peaking at 38.3 GW ☀️. Coupled with high wind production, 89% of Germany's electricity was generated from renewables. This output was substantial enough that over one-third of the electricity consumed in Denmark was imported from Germany, totaling 2.98 GW during that hour. This peak in production led to a negative spot price of -€4.19 / MWh in Germany, potentially causing the curtailment of wind production in Denmark to balance the highly interconnected European grid. This week also marked Germany's highest ever renewable percentage, with 90.16% of electricity coming from renewables on May 1st 🎉. Explore the data for yourself on our app: https://lnkd.in/emKFjdQH
