  • 🌱Today, on #WorldEnvironmentDay, we express our support for the indigenous Karen community of Kaboedin in Omkoi, Chiang Mai, Thailand. For more than five years, they have courageously defended their land, water, and community resources from the threat of a proposed coal mine in their area. It is essential to acknowledge and respect the beliefs, traditions, and ways of life of the indigenous peoples, like those in Kaboedin, who have coexisted with nature for centuries. Their struggle also emphasizes the urgent need to safeguard our ecosystems and prevent their degradation to address climate change. Ecosystems sustain all life on Earth, and their health is vital for our survival and the planet. ➡️To learn more about this topic, read our blog: https://qrco.de/WEDOmkoiEn , with contributions from Lanner (Thank you!). The global demand for permanent magnets, used in electric vehicles and wind turbines central to the energy transition, is driving the boom in rare earth mining. Our new investigation reveals the alarming expansion of heavy rare earth mining in Myanmar, and the devastating cost for communities and the environment. We found that: 🔴Imports of heavy rare earths from Myanmar to China - where they are processed - have more than doubled in the space of two years. 🔴In Kachin Special Region 1, controlled by militias aligned with Myanmar’s brutal military rulers, the number of mining sites has increased by more than 40%. 🔴Mine workers and local community members have reported numerous health issues. 🔴Contamination of waterways and pollution that is threatening to lay waste to a region regarded as a global biodiversity hotspot. We cannot have a just energy transition if the switch to renewables comes at the expense of people and the planet. https://lnkd.in/eKdCAyn4

🚨 Japan’s funding of the expansion of fossil fuels, including LNG, has led to numerous adverse impacts on biodiversity, health, and the livelihoods of local communities across Asia and globally. . In Thailand, for instance, the Japanese-financed power plant, which is fed by the LNG import terminal in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, has severely affected the fishing community, causing them to lose their livelihood. Its impact on biodiversity and various species of sea animals, which are vital sources of local food and income, has been devastating. Despite this, there has been no compensation for the loss of natural resources or their way of life. This illustrates that these industrial projects are detrimental to the quality of life of the local people. . ✊ As a result, frontline communities and climate activists had to take a stand and fight for fair compensation. . You, too, can help put pressure on Japan to stop financing LNG. Please sign this petition: https://chng.it/wTYpKwsx8H . #SayonaraFossilFuels #JBICMakesRayongSick
