The Dodgers and Japan have a storied history. It all dates back to the days of the Brooklyn Dodgers, when team owner Walter O'Malley worked alongside famed sportswriter Sotaro Suzuki to arrange a Goodwill Tour to visit our neighbors in the Far East. When Dodger Stadium opened in L.A. in 1962, Suzuki and his wife were invited to the grand ceremony. Three years later, an eight-foot-tall lantern arrived at the Stadium's doorstep, courtesy of the Shimizugumi Stone Works Company, which Suzuki commissioned to sculpt the masterpiece. Originally, fans could find it in the Stadium's Japanese garden, where it served as a shining centerpiece among tranquil river-rock paths and cherry blossoms maintained by Frank Ego, a local greenskeeper and long-time fan of Suzuki's work. But, after nearly six decades and a recent change in scenery, the 3,291-pound lantern stands tall at Top Deck, with an origin story grand enough to support its weight. With the arrival of Ohtani and Yamamoto, we are proud to start a new chapter and celebrate our decades-long relationship with Japan.
