“I just wanted to be a fish biologist. I didn’t want to be the Black, female fish biologist. But it does matter that I am…it matters to people.” Long-time USFWS manager Judy Gordon reflects on life lessons, challenges, and the importance of mentors over her nearly 40-year career in conservation. But Gordon says that at the end of the day, it is not about her. Thinking about your weekend plans? National Fishing and Boating Week is a great time to learn to fish, reconnect with your canoe or kayak, and enjoy the water with friends and family. Fishing can enrich our lives in so many ways — relieving stress, improving our health, and experiencing the outdoors. By practicing responsible fishing and boating, we can play a significant role in protecting fishing for future generations. A few tips to remember: 💡 Always carry out what you brought in, and never leave plastic containers or packaging behind. Fishing lines are hazardous to birds and other wildlife, so pick up and recycle them. 💡 To protect the water from invasive species, never move fish or plants from one body of water to another or release unused live bait into the water. Also, remember to clean boats, trailers, and equipment – be sure to drain your boat and dry it in the sun for five days or wipe it with a towel before reuse. On June 6, 1944, brave souls from the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, marking the beginning of the end of World War II. Their courage and sacrifice paved the way for peace and freedom across Europe. We remember their valor and the profound impact of their actions. Let us never forget the price of liberty. #DDay80

#PeopleOfInterior I love getting to share the amazing work that our youth and young adults are doing in our national parks each day on social media, in articles, and virtual events. I also enjoy getting to travel to national parks, since I work at the national level. I think it’s crucial to connect with the people we support daily. As a very extroverted and outgoing person, I love getting to work with people across the NPS at all levels, from our parks, programs, and offices to our many partners, and the public. While I was born in China, I was adopted at the age of three and a half. Because of this, my identity is very much just American. I have felt at odds with how I feel inside and what everyone else sees on the outside. When I came to the National Park Service, I became much more aware of how others perceived the Asian group as a whole. Because of my experience, I do not make assumptions about who someone is based on their race or ethnicity. I ask people questions about themselves out of curiosity so they can tell me who they are. In my free time, I love to be out in nature, sing, dance, and act. I have performed many times on stage, and it is absolutely thrilling. I currently sing with a chamber choir, and we will be going on tour to Ireland next April 2025. I work hard but also find time to have fun and enjoy life outside of work too!
