Is there an association between common blood pressure medications and increased fracture risk among older long-term nursing home residents?   That is exactly what researchers set out to determine in this recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, which examined 29,648 older VA nursing home residents. The study found that common blood pressure medicines induce sudden dizziness caused by a temporary bout of low blood pressure, making individuals already vulnerable to balance issues even more at risk of serious injury.   These findings underscore the need for heightened vigilance and caution when initiating these medications in vulnerable populations. While blood pressure medications are crucial, extra attention and monitoring is vital for this population. Preventing falls can ultimately save lives. In a recent Forbes Health article titled “The Safety of Older Adults Aging in Place,” Meaghan Harmon delves into the empowering trend of older adults opting to age at home. The article presents survey findings that underscore the reasons for aging in place, the concerns, and many of the risks.   Some key takeaways include: ➡ 86% of older adults prioritize maintaining their independence. ➡ 84% of older adults prefer aging in place for happiness. ➡ 52% live alone while aging in place. ➡ 34% worry about falling or needing medical attention while aging in place.
