Picture this: A battery pack is connected to a charger and is left to recharge. The first minute goes smoothly, with electricity flowing into the pack as expected. Then, one battery cell suddenly experiences a short circuit and rapidly heats up, triggering a chain reaction as other cells in the pack follow suit. In our latest blog post, we explore this potentially dangerous scenario with a model of thermal runaway propagation in a battery pack. Read it here: https://buff.ly/4c8VfwF

Simulate real-world designs, devices, and processes with the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.
About us
COMSOL develops mathematical modeling software for driving new breakthroughs in physics and engineering. The COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation software is used to model designs, devices, and processes in all fields of engineering, manufacturing, and scientific research. It includes the Model Builder, with fully coupled multiphysics and single-physics modeling capabilities, and the Application Builder, for turning models into easy-to-use simulation apps. Add-on products with specialized functionality are available for electromagnetics, structural mechanics, acoustics, fluid flow, heat transfer, chemical engineering, and CAD interfacing. Apps can be distributed to design teams, manufacturing departments, test labs, customers, and more via COMSOL Compiler™, used to compile apps into standalone executable files, and COMSOL Server™, used to manage and distribute apps organizationwide. COMSOL was founded in 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden, and now includes 16 offices and a distributor network throughout the world.

To minimize the cost of the emission-free hydrogen produced by alkaline water electrolyzer stacks, it's important that the electrolyzers are operated as efficiently as possible, and that the electrolyzer can continue operating for as long as possible. One process that limits the efficiency and lifetime of the stack is the occurrence of parasitic shunt currents. Modeling and simulation can provide insight into the potential effects that shunt currents will have on the overall design. Learn more in this new blog post:

Researchers in photonics seek ways of controlling light in order to use it for information transmission and processing. One way to do this is with a photonic integrated circuit (PIC), a device that integrates different optical components — such as optical waveguides — on a single substrate. Learn how COMSOL Multiphysics can help in the design of waveguides and other optical components in this blog post:

The Monte Carlo method — a popular approach to calculating pi — is a computational technique that relies on random sampling to estimate numerical results. In today’s blog post, we take a quick trip through the history of pi, share a lighthearted overview of the Monte Carlo method, and show an example app that visualizes the real-time estimated value of pi as well as the error from the true value. Take a peek here: https://lnkd.in/eQVtVXfh

Surface-mount devices (SMDs) allow designers to fit many components onto a PCB. The soldering technology used to mount the SMDs places high levels of stress on the devices, which can cause performance-degrading deformation. Preconditioning is a process that reproduces these stresses in a controlled and repeatable manner and is performed prior to reliability testing. This process can be modeled to highlight if designs should be modified to avoid damage and improve yield and reliability. Here's an example that analyzes the thermal stress and hygroscopic swelling of one type of SMD, an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module, through the three preconditioning stages: https://lnkd.in/enbgTbUu
