The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival) is mainly associated with the legend of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman of the Warring States period in ancient China. Qu Yuan, in despair over the fall of his country, drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Local people, in order to commemorate him and protect his body from being eaten by fish, rowed boats on the river and threw rice dumplings into the water, leading to the traditions of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi (rice dumplings). Additionally, the Dragon Boat Festival is linked to ancient practices aimed at warding off evil and disease, such as hanging mugwort and calamus, wearing scented sachets, and drinking realgar wine. These legends and customs together form the origin and celebration practices of the Dragon Boat Festival.
